Small U.S. plane makes emergency landing in Iran: report

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

World Juniors: Malcolm Subban backstops Canada to win over U.S.

UFA, RUSSIA ? Malcolm Subban emerged from the Canadian dressing room in a cape.

He stood on his head ? and scrambled, and did the splits ? to answer his critics and just maybe steal a game for Canada at the world junior hockey championships, with a 2-1 win over Team USA.

So Team Canada's coaches gave him the cape as the team's superhero for the game.

?No one deserves it more than him,? said forward Ryan Strome. ?He proved a lot of people wrong. We knew he had it in him. He quieted a lot people.?

Related: Photo highlights from the game

Subban had been sub-par in games against Germany and Slovakia and some were wondering if it was time to turn to Jordan Binnington. But coach Steve Spott would have none of that talk.

?I'm really proud of him,? said Spott. ?Goaltending ... has been under the radar in our country for a couple of years. It's a big moment for Malcolm. It's a big moment for our hockey club.

?Like (goalie coach) Ron Tugnutt said: 'Give him a chance,' and he stood up tall in the net.?

Subban was humble after the win that vaulted Canada into first place in its group.

?It's just one game,? said Subban. ?Just trying to do everything I can.?

Canada relied on Subban in a big way after getting off to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome.

The Canadian power play went kaput, failing twice to score on 5-on-3s and Canadians then started to take penalties. Jake Trouba got the Americans on the board halfway through third.

Nugent-Hopkins then took a penalty with less than two minutes remaining, but Subban stonewalled the American attack.

?We needed that,? said Spott. ?You need to have a lead goaltender to win this tournament. We've seen over the last number of years you need your goaltender to be your best penalty killer and certainly he was tonight.?

The Americans ? considered gold-medal contenders ? find themselves in a fight to stay out of the relegation pool. They have only one win and need to beat Slovakia in their final game to have any medal chance.

?We have to win or we're out,? said American forward Rocco Grimaldi. ?We'll figure it out.?

Canada has nine points thanks to three regulation wins. The Russians have eight, needing overtime to do away with Slovakia.

Canada plays Russia on Monday in the final game of the round robin. The winner gets first place and a trip to the semifinals. The loser will finish second in the group and play the third place team in the other group in the elimination round.

?They come hard, they hit,? said Murphy. ?At the same time they capitalize on their opportunities. They'll definitely have the home crowd advantage. I saw about 400 Canadian fans out there. With them in crowd, we won't need any motivation.?

"Pushing the limits of material and process, Wheat expressively 'sculpts' and 'sews' with paint. Interested in the dichotomy of high and low culture, and society's notions of beauty, Wheat's subject matter centers upon the figure and narrative, both imagined and recollected, to explore the vulnerability and contradiction of life and story with sincerity and generous curiosity, and a warm touch of humor," says Grover.

China Biotech In Review: Unnamed China Pharma Buys Bayer's Vacated Bay-Area Campus

Deals and Financings

A major, though as-yet unnamed, China biopharma has bought the prestigious San Francisco-area biotech campus that formerly belonged to Bayer (BAYRY.PK) (see story). The six-building campus, which is located in Richmond, on the Berkeley side of the bay, has been empty for two years. The buyer has promised to disclose its identity and plans for the site next month. One source hints the company will seek to set up a biopharma hub, a US base for itself and other China biopharmas, rather than occupy the entire space itself. Whatever the plans turn out to be, the purchase signals a China pharma beachhead on US soil. The purchase price was not disclosed.

HitGen Ltd. and Viva Biotech Ltd., two China CROs specializing in early-stage services, announced a new collaboration. HitGen, located in Chengdu, offers lead generation services. Viva Biotech of Shanghai is a structure-based drug discovery CRO. According to the two companies, their now-integrated early hit-to lead generation program addresses a previously unmet need in China's pre-clinical drug discovery sector.

Naton Medical, a Beijing maker of orthopedic products, has joined with two Malaysia-based medical device companies, OSA Niaga and Straits Orthopedics, to form a Malaysia JV. The partners expect the company to produce $1.5 billion of revenue. The new enterprise will initially supply orthopedic products to Malaysia, then expand to other Asian countries and the Middle East. Eventually, it hopes to export to the developed markets of the US, Europe and Japan.

Government and Regulatory

India announced it will locate its own drug inspection office in China in March of 2013, complete with four full-time inspectors. It will be India's first foreign drug office in any country. The Beijing-located operation, which will be in charge of inspecting China manufacturing facilities that export products to India and the medical products themselves, will check to insure that GMP practices are being followed.

Disclosure: none.

Vegan Recipe: Lucky Greens and Blackeyes - Eat Drink Better

eating veganBlackeyed Peas

Long associated with luck and prosperity, no New Year?s celebration is complete without the mighty blackeyed pea!?Sadly, though, this Southern custom?rarely brings?good fortune to the?porcine folk whose hocks often wind up in traditional cuisine. This recipe offers savory holiday deliciousness, but?without chopping off anyone?s ankles ? and your?slow cooker?does most of the work, while you celebrate with family and friends.?What?great way to kick off?the New Year!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried blackeyed peas (about 2-1/2 to 3 cups after soaking)
  • 1 medium or large yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 large or 5 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (not ground thyme)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup vegan butter or refined coconut oil, melted
  • 3 cups seasoned vegetable broth (such as Better Than Boullion No-Chicken Base)
  • 1 bunch mustard greens (or turnip greens or kale),?washed well,?ribs removed,?and chopped or torn into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring, to taste
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 to 2?teaspoons Bragg?s Liquid Aminos or organic soy sauce (amount varies, depending on the broth you use)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Louisiana hot sauce

Directions

Soak blackeyed peas overnight, or quick-soak according to package directions.

Drain and rinse the soaked blackeyes. Combine blackeyed peas, onion, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper in your slow cooker. Stir in the melted vegan butter or coconut oil?and broth; the liquid should cover the blackeyes by about 1? to 1-1/2?. Splash in a bit more broth if needed (depending on the size of your slow cooker).

Cook on high heat for 1-1/2 hours.

After 1-1/2 hours, stir?in greens?a handful at a time, giving each bunch?a moment?to wilt before adding more. Cook for another 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours on high, until blackeyes are as done as you like them. To me, this dish works best when the?blackeyes and greens?are both?well?past al dente ??pretty soft, but not overshooting into mushy.

When you?re happy with the texture of the blackeyes and greens, stir in the liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, red wine vinegar, Bragg?s or organic soy sauce, and hot sauce. I personally recommend?fairly generous sprinklings of the hot sauce, Old Bay, and smoke flavoring!

Turn?the slow cooker heat?to low, to keep the greens and blackeyes warm for second helpings. Remove bay leaves, serve with sweet cornbread, and enjoy!

Production Notes

Makes about 6 large servings; preparation time: soak time plus 30 minutes; cooking time: 4 to 5 hrs.

This recipe works well as a make-ahead dish:?prep your?greens, soak the peas, and chop your garlic and onion the day before. Add the?spices and such on cooking day; and then just sit back and enjoy spending time with friends and family, while your slow cooker whips up a delicious dinner to start the year off right!

Happy New Year!

Northeast cities could get up to 6 inches of snow

The snow flying in the Ohio Valley is moving into Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with three to six inches of snow expected in NYC. The Weather Channel's Chris Warren reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

A second, smaller winter storm will hit the Northeast Friday night and into Saturday, dumping up to 6 inches of snow in major cities and up to a foot and a half of snow in less populated areas. But it won?t pack nearly the punch of the one earlier this week that brought twisters, high winds, icy roads, power outages and record snowfall, and that led to at least 17 deaths and thousands of grounded flights, affecting tens of thousands of holiday travelers.

"This storm will move at a rather brisk pace, so we don't expect any overwhelming snow amounts," weather.com reported.

The corridor from Philadelphia to New York City and Hartford, Conn., is expected to see snow totals in the 2 to 5 inch range, and more in the suburban and outlying areas, weather.com added. Boston?could see 4 to 6 inches of snow "if the low-pressure system tracks close enough to the coast."

For New York City, the snow should be just enough to create a "postcard" setting for sledding and strolling, NBCNewYork.com reported.

More storm coverage at weather.com

Washington, D.C., is looking at 1-3 inches, NBCWashington.com was forecasting. Some of that snow is likely to mix with rain.

Freezing rain -- making for treacherous travel conditions -- was predicted for parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia while significant rain was likely along the New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland coasts, the?National Weather Service?said.

It won't be a blockbuster snowfall, but most of the big cities in the Northeast will get one to three inches of snow. The Weather Channel's Chris Warren reports.

The weather service forecast 12 to 18 inches of snow for northern New England, accompanied by freezing rain and sleet.

Tom Olney, a 50-year-old stay-at-home father of two, was making plans to go sledding with his children in their hometown of Wayland, Mass.?

"We love snow," Olney told Reuters. "What else are you going to do when it's this wet and cold out?"?

Western Massachusetts, like much of the Northeast, had an uncharacteristically mild winter last year, but residents such as Olney say they are ready for a more typical cold season.?

"Mother Nature doesn't usually give you two in a row," he said. "We've still got a lot of supplies from last year, so I guess we're ready for it now."?

Eleven inches of snow was forecast for Buffalo, N.Y., where some 8 to 12 inches of snow fell overnight into Thursday. Prior to that, Buffalo was 23 inches below average for this time of year, the weather service said.

"It's just a reminder: Winter is here," said Tom Paone of the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The earlier winter storm was tied to at least 17 deaths and?forced the cancellation of thousands of airline flights. It?dumped record snow in north Texas and Arkansas before sweeping through the South on Christmas Day and then veering north, where the Adirondacks got 20 inches of snow.

More than 2,000 flights have been canceled, and more than 200,000 customers are without power in several Southern states as the impact of severe winter weather was felt across the nation. NBC's Eric Fisher reports.

It also triggered tornadoes and left almost 200,000 homes and businesses in Arkansas and Alabama lost power on Wednesday.

In Arkansas, 106,000 homes and businesses were still without power Friday afternoon, and the state's largest utility said many might not get it back until after Jan. 1.?

Deena Brazell spent a night in her car for warmth, though she hadn't planned it that way.

"Everything in the apartment is electric. I stayed in the apartment the first night. After that, it got cold really quick," she told The Associated Press. "I went out to charge the phone and fell asleep, then I just decided to stay."?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Ice and snow changes our environment, as winter engulfs our world.

Israel indicts ex-minister Lieberman

JERUSALEM ?

Israel's Justice Ministry filed its indictment of former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman in a Jerusalem court on Sunday, charging him with breach of trust and fraud in a case that could hurt his political future.

Lieberman is accused of trying to advance the career of a former diplomat after the envoy relayed information to him about a criminal investigation into the former Cabinet minister's business dealings.

On Dec. 13, the Justice Ministry released a draft indictment to both Lieberman and the press. On Sunday, an amended version of that draft was filed in the Jerusalem Magistrates Court after prosecutors received testimony suggesting he was more deeply involved than previously thought in trying to promote the diplomat.

The actual charges remained unchanged.

Lieberman, who denies any wrongdoing, resigned his Cabinet post earlier this month after he was informed of the pending charges, though he remains a member of parliament. He did not appear in court on Sunday and had no comment on the indictment.

The diplomat he tried to promote, former ambassador to Belarus Zeev Ben-Aryeh, reached a plea bargain with the state in the case earlier this year.

The indictment did not address the main suspicions against Lieberman that had been the focus of a years-long investigation. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein ultimately decided that prosecutors did not have a strong enough case to charge Lieberman with illicitly receiving millions of dollars from businessmen and laundering the cash through straw companies in eastern Europe.

While he was charged with lesser offenses, Lieberman's political future could be compromised if the court that hears the case decides to convict him of a crime that carries what is known in Israeli law as "moral turpitude." Lawmakers convicted of such crimes must resign immediately from parliament, then are barred from re-entering politics for seven years.

Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu party is running on a joint list with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud in the Jan. 22 election, and he is expected to be re-elected to parliament. Political commentators had viewed the hookup as grooming him to become a future prime minister. Lieberman takes a hard line on concessions to the Palestinians and perceives Israel's large Arab minority as a threat to the Jewish state.

In other political news, Israel's Supreme Court unanimously rejected an election committee's attempt to disqualify an Arab lawmaker from running for parliament again next month because she took part in a flotilla that tried to breach Israel's naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

The lawmaker, Hanin Zoabi, enraged many Israelis in 2010 by joining the Turkish-led Mavi Marmara flotilla, which was stormed by Israeli naval commandos who clashed with pro-Palestinian activists, killing nine. The Israeli military says the soldiers acted in self-defense after being attacked on the deck.

Zoabi was nearly assaulted in parliament by another lawmaker and subsequently was stripped of some of her parliamentary privileges.

Earlier this month, an Israeli elections committee voted to disqualify her from running in next month's election. She appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, which overturned it, as it has rejected the committee's attempts in previous years to bar other Arab candidates from running.

"I welcome the ruling," Zoabi said. "I hope this ruling will put an end to the political witchhunt."

Lawmaker Danny Danon, who collected thousands of signatures demanding that Zoabi's candidacy be disqualified, accused the court of "backing the Marmara terrorist rather than naval commando fighters."

The court said in its ruling that it would release its reason for overturning the decision at a later date. Under Israel's election law, the court had to issue its ruling by Sunday.

The real estate game is something that I did want a part of when I was a police officer. ?In fact, today, as a full time and local Santa Clarita real estate agent, the ?game? is something I can do without.

I know those agent that are full of ego. ?Heck, I was surrounded by people that had all of the reason in the world to have an Ego ? but did not. ?We knew a true ?operator?, in the law enforcement circles, when others told us about their?prowess?and when they were quiet, reserved and remained professional at all times.

In real estate ? it?s not that way for the most part. ?Instead of agents talking about how they are protecting and serving their clients ? they are talking about how great they are.

I suppose ?greatness? can be defined by one?s self. ?However the best way to have ?greatness? defined is to hear it out of the mouth?s of others. ?That is why we encourage both bad and good comments to hit Yelp. ?If you search on yelp for Santa Clarita real estate, you may be surprised on what you will find.

When it comes to service professionals in real estate within the Santa Clarita Valley, we are not ?blind? to those and their ways of advertising. ?We want you to know there is a different type of real estate agent that exists in the world.

AP sources: Saints, Payton, agree to terms on deal

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The New Orleans Saints and suspended coach Sean Payton will indeed be together again next season as the bounty scandal fades into history and the bid to win a second Super Bowl resumes.

Payton has agreed in principle to a multiyear contract extension, according to two people familiar with the deal.

The people told The Associated Press about the deal Friday night on condition of anonymity because it hasn't been signed and final details regarding the length of the contract and financial compensation are still being worked out.

"Very happy it is official," Brees said in an email to the AP. "Never had any doubts."

Payton was due to begin his seventh season as the Saints' head coach in 2012 before being suspended for the whole season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in connection with the NFL's bounty investigation.

Payton signed an extension in 2011 that would have kept him in New Orleans through 2015, but Goodell objected to certain language in that deal, leaving Payton's future uncertain until the deal was reached Friday. The language in question in the previous extension gave Payton the right to opt out early if general manager Mickey Loomis left the club for any reason.

The new agreement, which was first reported by Fox Sports, also must be approved by the NFL.

Payton is the only coach in Saints history to win a Super Bowl, a title earned at the end of the 2009 season. But his legacy was tarnished by the NFL's bounty probe, as Goodell ruled that Payton failed to exert proper institutional control over a cash-for-hits bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams from 2009-2011.

Although the Saints objected to the characterization of what coaches and players have said was nothing more than a performance pool for big plays, Goodell suspended Payton for the entire season. The commissioner also suspended Loomis for half of the season and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games.

Payton is 62-34 as in regular-season games as Saints head coach and 5-3 in the postseason. During the three seasons before his suspension, the Saints won 41 regular-season and playoff games combined, more than any other team in the NFL.

Payton has primarily handled the offense in New Orleans, teaming up with Brees to break numerous NFL and club records. The single-season NFL records set by the Saints in 2011 included yards passing by a team (5,505) and a quarterback (5,476). The Saints also set a record for total offensive yards with 7,474.

Although speculation ran rampant that Payton could essentially become a free agent after this season and end up elsewhere, Brees repeatedly said he would be "shocked" if Payton ended up anywhere but New Orleans next season. Brees is under contract with the Saints through the 2016 season, and Payton was the driving force in the Saints' effort to acquire Brees as a free agent in 2006.

Without Payton on the sideline this season, the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Brees remained prolific, but his 18 interceptions also tied for a league high heading into the final weekend of the season.

The Saints headed into Sunday's season finale against Carolina at 7-8, hoping to avoid their first losing season since they went 7-9 in 2007.

Payton is expected to return to the Saints immediately after the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, unless Goodell allows him to return earlier.

When Payton reports back to work, it will offically close the book on the bounty saga that has overshadowed the Saints' organization since the NFL first announced on March 2 that it found the Saints ran a program that paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured opponents.

In addition to the suspensions of Payton, Loomis and Vitt, the Saints also were dicked second-round draft choices in 2012 and 2013, though Goodell has said he could potentially restores the Saints' 2013 second-round choice and dock the team a later-round pick.

Meanwhile, four current or former Saints were initially given suspensions of varying lengths. Two current Saints defensive captains, linebacker Jon Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, were among those suspended. Vilma was banned for the whole season and Smith for four games, but the players successfully challenged their punishment with the help of the NFL Players Association and never served a game.

Former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was appointed by Goodell to oversee the players' appeals, ruled that the NFL probe was accurate in its findings that the Saints ran and improper program and attempted to cover it up, but that the evidence was not strong enough to warrant unprecedented suspensions for players who had been only fined for similar behavior in the past.

Bundesbanker calls for limits on bank lending to government

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The vice president of Germany's Bundesbank has proposed setting limits for how much banks can lend to governments and backing such exposures with adequate capital to make them less reliant on taxpayers' help in crisis times.

Sabine Lautenschlaeger, who is also a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision which wrote the new global banking standards known as Basel III, told Reuters current regulation was setting the wrong incentives.

During the debt crisis, banks especially in troubled euro zone countries like Spain and Italy increasingly bought government debt and under Basel III they don't have to set capital aside to counter possible default risks.

"In the medium term for sovereign debt, there should be limits for overall exposure and capital should be required, which adequately reflects the risk," Lautenschlaeger said. "Regulation so far is setting the wrong incentives."

"But it has to be done with caution, for example with transition periods, because credit institutions and states need time to adjust," she added. "In the end, such a step would strengthen banks' resilience and thereby markets' confidence."

Another step that would boost confidence would be a swift implementation of Basel III, which world leaders approved in late 2010 and that now needs to be put into domestic law.

"It is very important that Basel III is implemented as soon as possible, I would like it to be next year. Whether it will be summer or winter is not that important," she urged lawmakers.

Europe and the United States, the world's two largest banking markets, will miss the globally-agreed January deadline.

Lautenschlaeger said her U.S. colleagues in the Basel Committee had stressed that they wanted to implement Basel III, but they hadn't been able to give a date when they would do so.

LEGAL FOUNDATION

Lautenschlaeger's calls for a cap on banks' exposure to government debt echoes earlier comments by Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, who had raised the issue back in November as a means to break the negative feedback loop between indebted states and troubled banks.

The planned banking union also aims to address the close tie by putting a new European banking supervision regime under the roof of the ECB, as well as with a scheme to wind down banks and a combined means of deposit protection to prevent bank runs.

Lautenschlaeger praised the agreement struck earlier this month to put the ECB in charge to directly police at least 150 of the euro zone's biggest banks from 2014 and intervene in smaller banks at the first sign of trouble.

But she questioned whether the new supervisory body's proposed operating structure was in line with EU law.

"To my understanding, the ECB Governing Council should only be able to approve or reject proposals made by the supervisory board; it should not be able to include own ideas. Beyond that an arbitration committee was introduced," she explained, adding that this was done to separate supervisory and monetary policy.

"It is questionable whether this is possible under EU law, and whether it is justified that the ECB Council will be responsible for administrative decisions without direct scope for influencing them," Lautenschlaeger said.

German magazine der Spiegel reported earlier this month that the Bundesbank had serious reservations about the legal framework.

2012 TV: 12 Things We'll Miss Including Larry Hagman, 'Smash' Scarves And More

As this year winds down, we're looking back at the good, the bad and the ugly of TV in 2012.

Not only did Liz Lemon finally tie the knot after years of singledom, but "Dallas" legend Larry Hagman passed away and the new "Smash" showrunner Josh Safran announced that scarves, the show's iconic accessory, would be done away with.

Click through the slideshow for a look at 12 things we'll miss from this year. Add your own in the comments below!

  • Kristen Bell's Sassy "Gossip Girl" Voice

For six seasons, Kristen Bell's trusty (and sassy) voice narrated the comings and goings of everyone's favorite group of fashionable Upper East Siders. What will we do without her thoughtful "Gossip Girl" commentary on Monday nights? You know you loved it.

  • "Smash" Scarves

When "Gossip Girl" showrunner Josh Safran was handed the "Smash" ropes, he immediately made an important fashion choice: No more scarves for Debra Messing. We made fun of them while they were around, but how will Debra Messing seek comfort when she needs to cry in Season 2?

  • Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green As "Voice" Coaches

Adam Levine and Blake Shelton are great to have around, but "The Voice" just won't be the same without Christina Aguilera's eccentricities and Cee Lo's goofy style. Let's hope Usher and Shakira are ready to bring it!

  • Crystal the Monkey

NBC's "Animal Practice" may have been short-lived and a little mind-numbing, but Crystal The Monkey's stint as Dr. Rizzo is one we'll never forget. Hopefully she'll pop up on our TVs again soon!

  • Lane Pryce

When Jared Harris' character Lane Pryce hanged himself on this season of "Mad Men," fans were devastated, and not just because his death was so horrifying. Lane's adorable accent and quirky ways were an asset at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, and he will be greatly missed.

  • Larry Hagman

Saying goodbye to Larry Hagman is one of the saddest things the TV world had to do this year. When the "Dallas" star lost his battle with cancer after only one season of TNT's reboot, longtime fans were forced leave J.R. Ewing behind for good. He'll appear in a few episodes of Season 2, but watching will certainly be bittersweet.

  • Dan Harmon as the "Community" Showrunner

When NBC fired Dan Harmon from "Community," the showrunner made sure to go out with a bang. After adding a series of ridiculous plot lines and over-the-top jokes, Harmon bid farewell to The Study Group.

  • "House"

There's no doubt we'll miss our favorite curmudgeonly doctor, but it was about time "House" wrapped up. Luckily, Hugh Laurie's in talks to join NBC's pirate drama as Blackbeard ... so we may not have seen the last of him.

  • Single Liz Lemon

Everyone's favorite spinster is single no more! Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) got married to Criss (James Marsden) this year, and while we're happy for her we can't help but miss her comedic dating disasters just a little bit.

  • Andy Samberg & Kristen Wiig on "Saturday Night Live"

So long, Kristen Wiig and Any Samberg! The "Saturday Night Live" comedians are off to make movies and be super famous, but we'll miss them on stage of Studio 8H.

  • "Damages"

We'll never forget you, Patty Hewes. In 2012, "Damages" wrapped up its five season run as one of the most intense legal dramas to ever grace our TVs, taking with it our weekly dose of Glenn Close as the dastardly Patty Hewes. There will never be another character like her.

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar on TV

Yes, "Ringer" was pretty, pretty, pretty bad, but man it was good having Sarah Michelle Gellar back on our TV. Come back to us soon, SMG ... but with a better show.

Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

22 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

Industry Tastemakers on Their 2012 Restaurant Breakups - Eater NY

Q: Were there any restaurants that you broke up with in 2012?
Ryan Sutton, Bloomberg critic: I stopped going to Isa because it used to be a restaurant with a point of view. Now, it serves Italian food. I haven't been back since chefs Ignacio Mattos and Pam Yung and others left in the staff shakeup. Maybe I'll give Isa a try in 2013. Or maybe I won't. There's a ton of interesting restaurants to eat at in Williamsburg. And then there's Isa, which serves a Caesar salad for $14.

Adam Kuban, Slice founder: Papa John's. Not that it was hard. I only sampled it occasionally for research purposes as relates to Slice. But after this year, I can't stomach giving any little bit of revenue to that guy. Also, dollar-slice joints. That stuff is dragging down the quality of all New York?style pizza.

Gabriella Gershenson, senior editor at Saveur: For there to have been a break up with Pok Pok, there would have to be a pre-existing relationship. The first time I went I was appalled by how the people waiting outside in line were left to bake in the sun without so much as a glass of water or a peep from the front of house. That was followed by perfunctory service and nonexistent decor (and not in a charming way). The food was very good, which is a shame, because the overall experience was punishing.

Chris Stang, Immaculate Infatuation: I love Sushi Seki, but that place is going to make me go broke. I feel like it gets more expensive every time I go.

Robert Simonson, Times cocktail writer: I'm not going to name specific bars, but I will say this. I develop a quick bias against any bar or restaurant that hires a noted cocktail consultant to put together their drinks program, amid a lot of hoopla and press attention, and then six months later quietly declines to renew that consultant's contract, without telling the public. That's dirty pool, as far as I'm concerned. Bait and switch. And it happens more and more. Particularly in Midtown Manhattan.

Darin Bresnitz, Snacky Tunes/Finger on the Pulse: When Ignacio left Isa, I swore I would never go back. From what I hear, I made the right call.

Kat Kinsman, Eatocracy managing editor: I'm pretty wrenched about the outpost of Almondine in my neighborhood having to break up with all of us after damage at its Dumbo locale. I blame that jerk Sandy for getting between us.

Levi Dalton, I'll Drink to That: Ssam Bar. I went 40 + times, and they never once said, "Nice to see you again." Look, if I ask a girl to the prom five times and she says no every time, then I ask another girl. If I ask her 50 times and she says no every time, then I'm insane. Even if she is hot.

Jordana Rothman: Not as such, although I will never go to Bill's Gay Nineties again?not so long as it's in DeLucie drag anyway. I loved that old saloon in its dusty and merry original incarnation. I scowl to see what's become of it. To borrow a phrase: a shonda.

Josh Ozersky, TIME columnist: KFC. I still love that chicken. But I can't condone the abuse. There were some favorites I didn't break up with but took an accidental break from and will return to as soon as I can: The Little Owl/Market Table, Minetta, anywhere Akhtar Nawab is cooking, The Modern, Daniel, and Hill Country come to mind.

Robert Sietsema, Village Voice critic: En Japanese Brasserie ? not because it got any worse, I just got tired of it. Ditto La Bonbonniere.

Jay Cheshes, Time Out New York critic: I switched my dim sum allegiance from Sunshine on Bowery to Royal Seafood on Mott.

Andrew Friedman, author and Toqueland editor: I proactively break up with any place with reservation hassles or insane lines, then provisionally make up when the heat dies down: See you in 2013 Mission Chinese and Pok Pok NY!

Danyelle Freeman, Restaurant Girl: Isa. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. It was excellent and unique until they went and changed the concept and the chef. They were riding high and getting tons of great press. So why mess with it?

Scott Solish, Eater nightlife editor: I break up with four restaurants a week. It's hard to keep 'em all straight.

Alexander Hancock, Eater associate editor: Mercer Kitchen. Had service that was just hilariously bad there one Saturday night, beyond anything that should ever happen (and I'm willing to forgive a LOT because I know what it's like to have an off night in a restaurant).

Marc Shepherd, NY Journal: Lincoln: I don't think I made it there even once, and it was one of my favorites last year. I wouldn't exactly say we broke up, but I think Lincoln has stalled.

Kim Davis, the Pink Pig: Ssam Bar slipped off the list. Been there, done that.

Kate Krader, Food & Wine restaurant editor: I'm not not going to Balthazar, but I don't know when I'm going to go back to deal with the attitude for a table for brunch. (I know, brunch at Balthazar. What was I thinking?)

Foster Kamer, senior editor at Complex: Sorry, Bar Pitti: You're just not worth the trouble, or what your food does to my stomach. It's you, not me. Brooklyn Star, you have finally been overpopulated with assholes to the point of no return, I'm afraid (which may go hand-in-hand with the quality of the preparation of your food straight dropping off). Finally, after leaving the Observer, I no longer have to suffer the depressing wasteland?cultural, culinary, or otherwise?that is Midtown West. But I will miss La Rosita in Hell's Kitchen. Not enough to go out of my way to get it, but still: it's a special little place/hideaway.

Greg Morabito, Eater editor: I broke up with Paulie Gee's for a few months there, but we worked it out and I'm back.

4 Delicious Holiday Drinks - Good Food Life

Hot chocolate

This post written by guest blogger?Ashley Redfern

Whether the holiday season finds you preparing traditional meals for family and friends, organizing or attending a New Year?s Eve party, skiing on fresh powder in the mountains, or staying warm during the short, dark days at the end of the year, here are four festive beverages to complement any of these occasions.
Hot toddy

Hot Toddy

There?s nothing quite like a hot toddy to beat cold winter weather. It?s said that the honey and spices aid in cold-prevention while warming the body and stimulating the senses. You can make these with practically any brown liquor (dark rum, whiskey, brandy, scotch), a sweetener (simple syrup, sugar, honey), and hot tea or water. Elements like ginger, lemon, star anise, cinnamon, clove and vanilla enrich the flavor and garnish the drink. My favorite thermos-filler for a day of skiing is Lemon Ginger Whiskey Hot Toddy:
For 2 servings: Steep 1 Tbsp. fresh Grated Ginger in 3 cups Simmering Water (about 10 minutes), add 1 Tbsp. Honey, Juice from 1 Lemon & a shot (or two) of Whiskey.

Hot chocolate

Decadent Viennese Hot Chocolate

This is a rich, warming classic to follow chilly outdoor activity or punctuate a cozy day inside. For an extra splash of ?grown-ups only? holiday flair, add Peppermint Schnapps.

For 4 servings: 4 oz (120g) of 64% Chocolate, 2 cups (500ml) Milk, 2 Tbsp Bitter Cocoa (reserve some for garnish), 4 tbsp Superfine Sugar, 2/3 cup (150g) Whipping Cream, well chilled (Vanilla Bean Seeds add rich earthy flavor to the whipped cream, if desired), 8 oz Peppermint Schnapps.

First, heat milk, cocoa and sugar in a pan until just before boiling. Meanwhile, grate chocolate and beat heavy cream to firm peaks. Remove pan from heat, add grated chocolate and mix in blender or whisk in a large bowl at high speed for at least 2 minutes. When hot chocolate is foamy, serve immediately in large mugs (add peppermint schnapps) and top with whipped cream. Sprinkle cocoa on top and enjoy!

Cranberry spritz
Gingered Cranberry Campari Spritz

This sparkling libation is fun as a pre-meal refreshment or as a tantalizing twist on a bubbly classic for a toast.

FOR 8 SERVINGS: 2 Tbsp. fresh grated Ginger, 2 Cups fresh Cranberries, 1 Cup Cranberry Juice, 1 Cup Water, 1/4 Cup Sugar, 8 oz Campari, 1 Bottle chilled Prosecco or Sparkling White Wine

First, simmer Ginger, Cranberries, Juice, Water and Sugar together in a pan on medium heat until berries burst. Cool and strain liquid through a fine mesh sieve (delicious gingered cranberry sauce is a welcome by-product). Add strained liquid to Campari and pour 1/4 cup into 8 champagne flutes. Top glasses off evenly with chilled sparkling wine/Prosecco. Salute!

Eggnog

Eggnog ? Naughty or Nice

During winter holidays, I never get tired of eggnog! There are many ways to enjoy this sumptuous treat, but these two are my list-toppers: Foamy Spiced Eggnog Latte, or a glass of chilled Eggnog mixed with a shot of Whiskey (or Rum) and topped with fresh ground nutmeg.

Darren Collison Buzzer Beater: Mavericks Guard Sends Game Into Overtime, But OKC Wins (VIDEO)

It's unlikely Rick Carlisle drew it up this way. But it's also unlikely he cares.

With Carlisle's Mavericks trailing the Thunder, 98-95, with 2.2 seconds remaining, Dallas' Shawn Marion tried getting the inbound pass to Vince Carter on the wing. But the ball was deflected. Marion pounced on the ball, quickly took one dribble and then passed it to Darren Collison, who was standing beyond the 3-point line.

Without time running out, Collison jumped as he caught the ball and threw up a wild shot in mid-air.

In. Free basketball.

The officials reviewed the buzzer beater and confirmed that it was a made basket, sending the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Mavs, Russell Westbrook took over in the extra five minutes scoring eight of the team's 13 points as Oklahoma City went on to win 111-105.

Collison finished with 32 points and even though it didn't win the game, his buzzer beater was arguably the highlight of the game.

How deadly would chemical weapons in Syria be?

Concerns that the Syrian regime would use chemical weapons are putting the spotlight on these weapons of mass destruction.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / December 6, 2012

A view of damages on an empty street in the Aleppo district of Salaheddine, Syria, Dec. 5. Serious concerns have been raised about the Syrian regime using chemical weapons.

Serious concerns have been raised about chemical weapons in Syria as unnamed US officials on Wednesday told NBC News that Syrian forces have loaded sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into bombs that can be dropped by planes.

The officials said the bombs had not been loaded onto planes and there was not yet a decision from Syria's leader to use them.

President Obama has said the use of chemical weapons in Syria is a ?red line? that would draw the US into the war. Embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied that he?s planning to use them, unless international forces intervene. And Syrian officials have called recent accusations a ?pretext for intervention.?

The international community is now debating if and how to respond to this latest development.

As the situation unfolds, for many unfamiliar with sarin gas there may be some question as to what it is and just how deadly it can be. Though it?s classified as a weapon of mass destruction and is extremely lethal, it is not in the same league as nuclear weapons.

?Chemical weapons are not nuclear weapons. In order to produce a lot of damage they have to be distributed very efficiently. The problem with them is that they can be very deadly and efficient if used in population centers and their effects are indiscriminate,? says Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.

?The explosion of a single chemical shell would not necessarily be a catastrophe if it went off accidentally at one of these storage sites, but the deliberate use of one chemical shell in a population center could be very deadly,? adds Mr. Kimball.

Sarin is a colorless and odorless nerve agent that can be attached to missiles and artillery rounds and is primarily lethal when inhaled but can also penetrate skin and clothing.

It evaporates quickly, though under the right conditions it can linger for up to five days. As a result, a sarin attack requires little clean up and areas affected by sarin can be quickly reoccupied, making it a desirable weapon for military units looking to advance without destroying infrastructure and equipment.

It was first developed in Germany in 1938, but there was no known use of it as a weapon, until 1988 when Iraq used it against the Kurdish town of Halabja. The Iraqi military is also believed to have used sarin against Iran during the war between the two countries that spanned from 1980 to 1988.

Most recently, it was used by the Japanese group Aum Shinrikyo which manufactured their own form of impure sarin gas and released it on the Tokyo subway in 1995. The attack killed 12 and injured at least 5,500 people.

It?s unclear exactly how much damage would be caused were Syrian jets to drop bombs filled with sarin gas on an apartment block or populated area, but experts say the attack would likely be lethal and devastating, creating a major impact.

Costs For Marketing Mobile Apps Spiked Last Month Even As Downloads Temporarily Dropped

fiksu-costsAs app developers geared up for the super-competitive Christmas season, marketing costs rose by 30 percent in November from the month before, according to Fiksu, a Boston-based company that helps publishers find the most efficient marketing channels. The company said that the cost of getting a “loyal” user, or one that opens an app more than three times, rose to $1.38 from $1.06 in October. That reversed a four-month trend that saw marketing costs decline going into October’s launch of the iPhone 5. Fiksu said the average number of downloads for the top 200 free iPhone apps in the U.S. declined to 4.57 million per day in November, down from 5.4 million in October. This is a temporary decline following the annual bump that comes with the launch of a new Iphone. When consumers get new phones around the annual iPhone launch or Christmas, downloads spike temporarily as people try out new apps or download old favorites. ?We can expect costs and download volumes to climb through December, much like last year, as marketers spend heavily in preparation for the flood of new devices and rush of user activity and app discovery around Christmas,” said Fiksu’s CEO Micah Adler in a statement. Indeed, mobile analytics startup Flurry reported yesterday that app downloads spiked at 328 million on Christmas Day, a record high for a single day since Flurry started measuring app downloads. Downloads per hour peaked early at around 11 a.m. on the 25th, and remained high throughout the day until around 8:30 or 9 p.m. While Christmas represents a single-day peak, Flurry is projecting that app downloads will remain high throughout the next week and into New Year?s Day, ending the holiday period with over 1.5 billion downloads, and possibly reaching as high as 2 billion total. Meanwhile, Fiksu is backed by Charles River Ventures. They’ve accumulated more than 63 billion app actions including launches, registrations and in-app purchases, as well as real-time bidding requests in helping developers find the most optimized ways of getting new users.

Some Type 2 Diabetes Remissions Possible With Exercise, Diet ...

From Your Health Journal?..?As many of you know, I raise money for diabetes awareness if I can ? and have a link on one of my web sites to assist with donations. The CDC came out with a new report that states one out of nine type 2s who followed an intensive diet and exercise program for one year were able to record normal or prediabetes-level blood sugar levels. Yes, this is something we already know, since type 2 diabetes is environmental, and many times, associated with obesity. So, eating right and getting some daily physical activity can potentially lower someones weight and help a type 2 diabetic have normal blood sugar levels. Researchers noted that patients most likely to achieve remission of diabetes-level blood sugar measurements had been diagnosed with type 2 for fewer years, and lost more weight and achieved greater fitness during the course of the study than their peers. Please visit the Diabetes Health web site for the full story (link below) ? as well as learning more about diabetes, it is a fantastic site.?

From the article?..

One out of nine type 2s who followed an intensive diet and exercise program for one year were able to record normal or prediabetes-level blood sugar levels, according to a study recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the multi-year study, which has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 11.5 percent?roughly one in nine?of the type 2 patients who followed a rigorous diet and exercise routine were able to drop their blood sugar levels below the diabetes threshold of 126 mg/dL without the use of medication. This compared to 2 percent of patients in a non-diet, non-exercise control group who were able to achieve the same result.

The diet called for a daily intake of 1,200 to 1,800 calories, including beverages, and physical activity adding up to just under three hours per week.

Researchers noted that patients most likely to achieve remission of diabetes-level blood sugar measurements had been diagnosed with type 2 for fewer years, and lost more weight and achieved greater fitness during the course of the study than their peers.
