Personal Development Forum: A Few Of The Best Self Help Books ...

By Ralph Summers

Anyone that pays attention to the book world knows that self help books are some of the biggest sellers in the industry. With so many different kinds out there, people are almost certain to find a text that can assist them with their problem. When seeking out the best self help books it is important to know the different kinds that are out there.

People turn to these types of publications as an alternative to more expensive options like therapists or personal trainers. Those suffering from depression will find that there is a wide array of literature available that might be able to assist them. However, those that have very serious problems should probably seek professional advice, as a book might not be enough.

Another self help book that people often turn to is the kind that deals with addiction issues and how to overcome them. Some people might have problems overeating, or are looking for guidance on how to quit smoking, or drinking alcohol. Even though a book should not be the only solution, it can be a great first step in helping a person turn their life in a new direction and overcoming the addictions that might be hurting them.

There are literally millions of people in the world that are dealing with some sort of weight issue. There are so many texts out there dealing with this issue that people might find the sheer number of options to be overwhelming. This is why it is important to narrow down the selection to publications that deal with a specific problem like eating junk food or not exercising properly.

Parents are always on the lookout for assistance in raising their children. There are many books that deal with parenting techniques or how to deal with particular issues. Those that have children with special needs will find there are plenty of texts out there that can give them some guidance and tips.

Marriage can be a tricky endeavor and most couples will require some outside assistance from time to time. These texts can give them advice on how to keep the marriage running smoothly and how to overcome common difficulties that most couples will encounter. Not only that, but a book is a much less expensive option than going to a marriage counselor, which can be quite expensive.

People that are trying to make it in the art world might turn to self help books for advice on their craft. Some publications will give advice for overcoming things like writers block or other difficulties artists might have. Others will impart valuable advice on how to get started or get how to get work in front of a larger audience.

People seeking out the best self help books must first be aware of all of the different options that are available to them. Sometimes these texts are not enough and people with very serious issues would be wise to seek professional help if their problem is out of control. It is no longer a shameful thing to look for assistance on the shelves of a bookstore.

>>> u.s. senate held its much anticipated hearing on banning military assault weapons today. just as it's become apparent that public opinion has begun to shift on the matter. a new poll shows that 61% of americans want stricter gun laws . 3 out of 5 want it. that's up since january and shows the power of president obama 's campaign on this matter. today's hearing was unusually emotional with tears, applause, and one particularly heated exchange that came between senator lindsey graham who was acting inexplicably today and edward flynn . let's listen to this.

>> just for the record from my point of view, senator --

>> how many cases have you made --

>> it doesn't matter. it's a paper thing. i want to stop 76 -- i want to finish the answer.

>> well, no --

>> i want to stop 76,000 people from buying gunning illegally. that's what a background check does. if you think we're going to do paperwork prosecutions, you're wrong.

>> how many cases --

>> senator. if you would withhold just a moment, please.

>> that's fine.

>> please. no expressions one way or another. and let's keep this civil. senator graham and i just got recognized for civility. so i know he'll keep it civil.

>> wow. but the most searing most of the day came when the father of a sandy hook elementary victim jesse lewis testified. neil heslin delivered testimony as he recalled saying good-bye to his 6-year-old son not long before the shooting. about an hour before we lost him. take a listen.

>> i said good-bye, i love you. he stopped and he said i love mom too. that was the last i saw jesse . as he ducked around the corner. prior to that when he was getting out of the truck, he hugged me and held me. and i can still feel that hug and that pat on the back. he said everything will be okay, dad. it's all going to be okay. and it wasn't okay.

>> well, neil heslin joins us right now. thank you for joining us tonight.

>> thank you.

>> and i guess i have to ask you about your willingness i think as a public service not just an honor and love to your son but to the country. what would you like to see happen here?

>> i would like to see many changes happen that would work effectively to prevent this from ever happening again. any mass murder . i believe we had seven of them this year alone. that's far too many.

>> let me pick them off. do you think it would help to have a trained police officer in the hallways of these schools? i'll take the nra position at first. do you think that will be helpful?

>> i agree. i think it would be helpful. it's not going to settle -- solve the problem. it's not a solution to the whole problem in complete, completely.

>> we live in this country with so many guns. i think there are more guns in this country than people now. where do we start? do you think we should start with assault weapons that were used here? these semiautomatics, with the magazines where you can load up a gun with 30 bullets. where do we start?

>> well, i think there's many places that need to be addressed. my view is a key factor in all these mass murders or mass killings was a weapon and a high capacity magazine. so-called assault weapon or like assault weapon . i think it needs to start with a ban on the certain types of guns and weapons. secondly a ban on high capacity magazines which is a main characteristic of those guns that had been used. i think background checks should be mandatory. but done efficiently and effectively. not necessarily on a state level, but on a federal level . i think mental health is a big part, too, that should be addressed.

>> well, that covers the boardwalk there. let me ask you about this situation of coming down. how hard was it to come down?

>> it's not easy go anywhere or be some place and have to defend -- try to defend the reason my why things should change over my son's that's been killed in a massacre. it's very hard. it's very emotional. and i just keep reliving my loss, or the loss of jesse .

>> well, that'll go on, sir. i can assure you it's going to go on. i hope you keep up your courage you showed today. thank you so much. neil heslin, father of the lost jesse . thanks for coming on tonight. i hope it helps.

>> thank you very much.

WADA says Pistorius substance isn't banned

Image: Oscar Pistorius in CourtGetty Images Contributor

Oscar Pistorius is accused of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14.

By GERALD IMRAY

updated 5:24 p.m. ET Feb. 27, 2013

JOHANNESBURG - The substance found in Oscar Pistorius' bedroom after the shooting death of his girlfriend was identified by his representatives Wednesday as Testis compositum - an herbal remedy they said is used for "muscle recovery." A product by that name also is sold as a sexual enhancer.

Testis compositum is marketed by some online retailers in both oral and injectable forms as a testosterone booster and sexual performance aid that contains the testicles, heart and embryo of pigs, among other ingredients. Some online retailers also say it can be used to treat fatigue.

At the Paralympian's bail hearing last week in the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, police said they found needles in Pistorius' bedroom along with the substance, which a detective initially named in court as testosterone. Prosecutors later withdrew that statement identifying the substance and said it had been sent for lab tests and couldn't be named until those tests were completed.

Pistorius spokeswoman Lunice Johnston said in an email to The Associated Press that the athlete's lawyers had confirmed that the substance is Testis compositum.

In the email, Johnston wrote that the product was being used "in aid of muscle recovery." She did not say whether the substance was the same as the product that is sold as a sex enhancer.

In court, Pistorius defense lawyer Barry Roux said the substance was not banned by sports authorities.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said its science department had already been made aware of the substance and that it wasn't banned.

"It would appear to be a homeopathic treatment, and these treatments are not prohibited by the list," WADA said in a statement to the AP.

Arne Ljungqvist, chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission, told the AP he had not heard of the product but that it sounded like "a real cocktail, all pointing in the same direction, namely having something to do with testosterone."

"This sounds to me like something that needs to be analyzed in order to make sure what it is," Ljungqvist said in a phone interview. "You cannot ban something simply on claims and names. It needs to be looked into. Even saying that it is testosterone boosting, it could contain some precursors. It needs to have some analysis."

Pieter Van Der Merwe, director of South Africa's Doping Control Laboratory in Bloemfontein, declined to comment on whether a sample from Pistorius had been sent to that laboratory for testing.

Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day shooting death of Steenkamp. He says he shot her by accident after mistaking her for an intruder in his home. Prosecutors allege he intended to kill her.

Police took Pistorius for a medical examination when he was arrested on Feb. 14, which included blood-alcohol tests, they said. The substance found in his bedroom was also being tested by police, who haven't released results.

Pistorius, a multiple Paralympic champion, underwent two doping tests in London last year around the Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee has said. He tested negative for any banned substances in both tests in August and September.

A product called Testis compositum is made by Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH, based in Baden-Baden, Germany. The company website says it is one of the world's leading makers of homeopathic combination medications.

A U.S. subsidiary, Heel USA Inc., advertises the product in tablet form only and spokeswoman Joan Sullivan said she didn't know if injectable versions are sold in other countries. Heel USA's website says the product provides temporary relief for men's "sexual weakness" and lack of stamina.

The U.S.-sold tablets contain 23 ingredients, including pig testicles, pig heart, pig embryo and pig adrenal gland, cortisone, ginseng and other botanicals. It also contains several minerals, according to a list Sullivan provided.

Charles Yesalis, a Penn State professor emeritus and expert on steroid use in sports, said animal steroids likely wouldn't have an athletic performance-enhancing effect unless taken in huge quantities. Even so, he said many elite athletes would be wary of using such supplements because they can be laced with banned substances and few would want to risk it.

The company website listed a South African subsidiary as ModHomCo (Pty) Ltd., based in Centurion, near Pretoria. That company couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The Engadget Interview: Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC2013

Few people understand the Internet of things better than Rob Chandhok -- president of Internet services at Qualcomm -- and we had the chance to sit down with him in Barcelona after our interview with Raj Talluri. We chatted about AllJoyn, a set of open source services which the company just revamped to incorporate a simple notification protocol -- an "SMS for things" -- small and durable enough to be useful for the life on an appliance, like a fridge or a washer. This provides a universal mechanism for notification and control, such as WiFi on-boarding, for example. He also mentioned AllJoyn audio, a streaming protocol that Qualcomm and DoubleTwist collaborated on. We then discussed various approaches and network topologies for building the Internet of things, such as IPv6-connected products with cloud-based logic vs. devices on local area networks that interact with the Internet via gateways (something that's prevalent in modern home automation). Check out the full interview video after the break.

Biting back: Snake venom contains toxic clotting factors

Feb. 27, 2013 ? The powerful venom of the saw-scaled viper Echis carinatus contains both anticoagulants and coagulants finds a study published in the launch edition of BioMed Central's open access journal Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases (JVATiTD). These may be a source of potent drugs to treat human disease.

The saw-scaled viper family Echis, responsible for most snake attacks on humans, are recognizable by the 'sizzling' noise they make, produced by rubbing together special serrated scales, when threatened. Echis venom causes coagulopathy, which can result in symptoms ranging from lack of blood clotting, hemorrhage, renal failure and stroke.

Researchers from the Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute, Iran led by Hossein Zolfagharian noted that treating plasma with venom from Echis carinatus actually causes it to coagulate. Splitting the venom by ion exchange chromatography showed that then venom contained both coagulants and anticoagulants. The clotting factors alone were toxic to mice.

The diametric effects of snake venom on blood are of interest because of medical applications, and although snakes can be considered as dangerous to humans -- they may yet save lives.

In the auspicious Year of the Snake, BioMed Central, the open access publisher, is pleased to announce that the Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases (JVATiTD), the official academic journal of the The Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals (CEVAP) of S?o Paulo State University (UNESP), based in Brazil, has moved to BioMed Central's open access publishing platform. Also this journal marks growth of BioMed Central's portfolio of open access journals to 250.

Along with research into snakes JVATiTD publishes studies into all aspects of toxins, venomous animals, and their derivative products, as well as tropical diseases especially infectious diseases, parasites and immunology.

Texas public school students don burqas, learn that Muslim terrorists are freedom fighters

Texas public schools have come under fire again. This time, a teacher allegedly encouraged high school girls to dress up in full-length Islamic burqas and then instructed the entire class that Muslim terrorists are actually freedom fighters.

The incident occurred in a world geography class at Lumberton High School in the small town of Lumberton, Texas. The general topic of the class that day was Islam.

An unnamed student informed WND that the teacher said, ?We are going to work to change your perception of Islam.?

?I do not necessarily agree with this,? the teacher also allegedly said, ?but I am supposed to teach you that we are not to call these people terrorists anymore, but freedom fighters.?

The controversial lesson came from a lesson plan provided by CSCOPE, an all-embracing, online K-12 educational curriculum used in 80 percent of the school districts in Texas. A rapidly growing chorus of critics charges that CSCOPE is a radical, backdoor way for progressives to circumvent both the Texas legislative process and the desires of local school boards and communities. (Ten shocking things CSCOPE is teaching kids in Texas)

A student in the class told WND that the burqa-related lesson focused mainly on the lives of women in Muslim countries. The enveloping outer face and body covering was treated more or less as a fashion accessory.

Apparently, no mention was made of the fact that women in Saudi Arabia and Iran must wear the garment under threat of arrest and criminal punishment.

At the end of class, the teacher assigned a paper about Egypt. A student explained to WND that the topic of the paper was ?how Egypt was a good country until democracy took over, and that things were finally corrected when the Muslim Brotherhood came into power.?

State Sen. Dan Patrick, chairman of the Texas state senate?s education committee, told Fox News that he found the photograph of the burqa-clad female students disturbing. Patrick was also concerned that the CSCOPE lesson apparently blames democracy for turmoil in Egypt and paints the Muslim Brotherhood as some political savior.

?Parents are very sensitive to any issue that seems to be anti-American ? that blames democracy for some sort of trouble in the world,? Patrick told Fox News.

The CSCOPE curriculum seems to be inherently agenda-driven ? particularly in history and social studies courses. The curriculum provider has foisted some hilariously biased coursework on public school students in The Lone Star State.

For example, CSCOPE has given students material suggesting that Christianity is a cult that parallels the death and resurrection in the story of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the dead. The same material takes pains to point out that early Christians were accused of incest, cannibalism and other atrocities.

There?s an infamous chart that innocuously describes communism as ?the idea of living together in a ?commune? where all people work together for everyone.?

Another notorious CSCOPE lesson (now ostensibly removed from circulation) depicts the Boston Tea Party, the famous protest against taxation without representation, as an act of terrorism.

As WND notes, CSCOPE also defines Republicans as lovers of ?big business over labor unions.? Warm and cuddly Democrats, meanwhile, ?will spend more tax dollars on education to benefits [sic] each individual.? (The grammar error is CSCOPE?s, not WND?s.)

CSCOPE labels fascism and Nazism as ?conservative,? despite the fact that both ideologies prescribe that the state should control everything and own all resources.

Tunisia: 4 in custody for politician's slaying

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Four suspects belonging to a radical Islamic group have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of a leftist politician that plunged Tunisia into crisis, but the killer himself remains at large, the interior minister said Tuesday.

Ali Larayedh, who has been tapped to be the next prime minister, said the Tunisian suspects, some of whom had been arrested in the last 48 hours, were accomplices to the murder and that the identity of the assassin is known.

The assassination of Chokri Belaid, an opposition politician from the Popular Front coalition, occurred outside his home on Feb. 6. It shocked the country, and many blamed the Islamist-led governing coalition, unleashing days of protests. On Sunday, thousands demonstrated in downtown Tunis over the lack of results in the investigation.

Many have accused the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party, which dominates the government, of complicity in the attack, citing its alleged use of gangs to intimidate political opponents. But Ennahda has denied ever resorting to any violence and has vehemently condemned the assassination.

Larayedh, who is a member of Ennahda, did not identify the group he was holding responsible for the assassination, but denied there were any foreign links to the killing.

Since the overthrow of Tunisia's secular dictatorship in January 2011, there has been a rise in ultraconservative Muslims known as Salafis, some of whom have resorted to violence. On Sept. 14, a band attacked the U.S. Embassy and damaged the surroundings. Tunisia's government has blamed the radical Islamic group Ansar al-Shariah for that attack and said it is trying to track down its leader.

Larayedh said that he was holding Tuesday's news conference in response to pressure for results of the investigation and media leaks the night before that had erroneously claimed the murderer himself had been arrested.

"The investigation is ongoing, and I will give you the latest conclusions," he said. "We cannot give any details that would affect the inquiry."

The four suspects range in age from 26 to 34 and are part of a "radical religious group," the minister said, adding that one had confessed to accompanying the actual assassin. At least some of the others detained had been involved in checking out the site a few days before the attack, the minister said.

Belaid was shot four times as he got in his car outside his house. The suspect involved in the actual attack took part in a reenactment of the crime scene outside Belaid's home on Tuesday wearing a mask and under heavy police guard.

"It was an ignoble crime with repercussions on the country's security and social peace, and has threatened to take us into chaos and the unknown," Larayedh said at the press conference.

The assassination resulted in the resignation of the country's prime minister, and Larayedh has been appointed his successor to form a new coalition government.

Authorities also have discovered many weapons caches and clashed with militants crossing into the country from neighboring Algeria and Libya. Larayedh said he believes some of the weapons were to carry out terrorist attacks inside Tunisia, while others were en route from Libya to Islamist militants fighting in northern Mali.

Meatless Mondays: Leek and Parmesan Risotto | Food & Drink ...

veg risotto

This week I felt, very briefly, a breath of spring in the air. So I decided for this Meatless Monday, I?d do a slightly lighter, sunnier meal. Never fear, it?s still hot, it?s still just as filling, but it just feels slightly less like one of those stodgy stews and heavy meals we?ve been living off for the past few months.

Risotto is one of those dishes which everyone always seems impressed that you make, because they think of Italian chefs and the intricacies of getting the rice just perfect. But honestly, it really doesn?t take much. Add wine, in liberal quantities, and everything will be just fine. Trust me.

In this recipe, you can add chicken stock if you just can?t handle a meal without meat, but to be honest, it is perfectly delicious with vegetable stock. Especially if you?ve made it yourself (Instead of throwing away all the peelings you take off veg, keep them, boil them up with some onion, garlic, lots of herbs and seasoning and water, let it simmer for a good hour or two until the liquid has reduced considerably and everything is looking a bit mushy, and then sieve. Voila, your very own stock.)

The other great thing about this is it is endlessly adaptable. You can do pea and fresh mint; courgette and bacon (for non-veggie days); or just about any green vegetable you can root out. I used peas, leeks as they?re in season, and some leftover mushrooms in mine, but this is the basic recipe. It serves 2 easily, or alternatively one and heat up the leftovers tomorrow.

Ingredients
4 spring onions
2 leeks
2 garlic cloves
150g rice
Unspecified amount of white wine, min 1 glass
750ml vegetable or chicken stock
Grated Parmesan (or vegetarian alternative)

Method
1. Chop spring onions and leeks finely, crush garlic and put in large deep pan with some oil. Fry gently for 5 minutes or until softened.
2. Pour in the rice, stir it around a bit, then pour in a glass-full of wine. You can always add more later. Allow the rice to soak up most of the wine.
3. Pour in about 100-200ml stock, and again, wait for it to reduce down. Repeat, with stock or wine, depending on how liberal you are feeling with the wine, until the rice is cooked to however you like it. Al dente or soggy as baby food, it?s your decision. Never mind what the Italians say.
4. Sprinkle with parmesan, and eat immediately with more wine. And voila, a great vegetarian meal, once again.

InFocus IN1144

The InFocus IN1144 ($600 street) is one more entry in a growing category of projectors that includes the Acer K330, the NEC NP-L50W, and the Editors' Choice 3M Mobile Projector MP410. What defines the category is a sub-three pound weight, a DLP chip with WXGA (1280 by 800) resolution, and an LED light source with either a 300 or 500-lumen rating. The IN1144 falls in the 500-lumen group, along with the Acer and NEC models, and it's one of the best in the group.

Aside from the brightness ratings, the biggest differences between the 300-lumen models and 500-lumen models in this category are their sizes and weights. The 300-lumen models generally weigh less than a pound by themselves and less than two pounds with their power blocks, while the 500-lumen models typically don't need power blocks but weigh between 2 pounds 8 ounces and just under 3 pounds. The IN1144 is a little unusual on this score. It weighs only 1 pound 13 ounces, but needs a power block. Even including the power block, however, the total weight is 2 pounds 10 ounces.

Basics
The IN1144 comes with a soft case large enough to hold the 1.7 by 6.7 by 5.4 inch (HWD) projector plus the power block, cables, credit-card size remote, and the optional Wi-Fi dongle ($29 direct). InFocus says you can download both Windows and Mac apps, but no mobile apps, ?from its website so you can show images over the wireless connection. For maximum portability, you can also use the projector with just an SD card or USB memory key. The IN1144 can read an assortment of file types directly, including most common image, video, and audio formats as well as PDF and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Setup is standard. In addition to an SD card slot and USB A port for a USB key, the back of the projector offers HDMI and VGA ports plus two mini plugs for A/V in and audio out. The A/V in port can accept both audio and composite video, but InFocus doesn't provide an appropriate adaptor for video. Also worth mention is a Kensington Lock slot on one side, so you can leave the projector sitting on a conference room table without worrying about someone walking away with it.

As with all the projectors in this category, the IN1144's LED light source is meant to last the life of the projector, which helps keep the total cost of ownership down. InFocus rates the LEDs at 30,000 hours.

Brightness and Data Image Quality
The 500-lumen rating is obviously far below the 2,500 or 3,000 lumens that's typical for today's lamp-based portable projectors. However, perception of brightness is logarithmic, which means you'll perceive 500 lumens as being much more than one fifth as bright as 2,500 lumens.

I found the projector bright enough to let me run my tests using the 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image size I normally use with standard projectors. However, even with theater dark lighting, the image wasn't bright enough at that size for extended viewing. If you want to watch, say, a full-length movie, a 55-inch wide (65-inch diagonal) size would be a better choice. With ambient light, you'll want to drop to an even smaller size.

Data image quality is reasonably good, but well short of excellent. On our standard suite of DisplayMate tests, colors were fully saturated in most modes, with yellow a true yellow, rather than a mustard color, but red and blue a little dark in terms of a hue-saturation-brightness color model. Color balance was excellent in most modes, with neutral grays over the full range from white to black.

One potentially annoying issue is that I couldn't get the entire screen in crisp focus all at the same time. I settled on focusing a broad diagonal swath from the upper left corner to the lower right, leaving two corners with slightly soft focus.

The IN1144 also shares one shortcoming with all of the other projectors in this category, with scaling artifacts (in the form of unwanted patterns in fills) at the claimed native resolution. As I discussed in detail my review of the Optoma ML500, this simply shouldn't happen. However, the artifacts won't be an issue for most people, since they show up only in patterned fills with closely spaced lines or dots. More important, the scaling doesn't affect text readability very much, as it does with some projectors in this category. Text was easily readable at sizes as small as 6.8 points.

Video and Other Issues
Video quality for the IN1144 is best described as watchable. I saw a slight loss of shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas) and a tendency for skin tones to be slightly greenish in some scenes, but the quality overall was better than many data projectors can manage.

It also helps that the IN1144 doesn't show rainbow artifacts easily, which is always a potential problem for single-chip DLP projectors, with bright areas breaking up into red-green-blue rainbows. As is typical, the rainbows show up more frequently with video than with data images, but I didn't see any with data, and saw far fewer with video than I've seen with most DLP projectors.

One other plus for the IN1144 is its surprisingly good audio quality. I was able to hear every word of some quietly spoken dialog that's impossible to decipher with most projectors. Unfortunately the two-watt speaker doesn't offer a lot of volume, so you may not hear much from more than three or four feet away.

Despite some minor issues that keep it from being Editors' Choice, most notably the lack of even focus across the entire screen, the InFocus IN1144 stands out from the pack of 300 and 500-lumen projectors. Its balance of brightness, data image quality, video quality, and features?including the ability to read an assortment of file formats from USB keys and SD cards?makes it at least a match for most of its competition, while its near lack of rainbow artifacts makes it far more watchable for anyone who's sensitive to seeing those artifacts. If you want a projector that's both highly portable and eminently watchable, the InFocus IN1144 should be on your short list.

You Are Here: Home ? Politics ? Political corruption sullying African democracies ? Dr Okonjo-Iweala

Page last updated at Monday, February 25, 2013 7:07 AM // Dr Okonjo-Iweala

Dr Okonjo-Iweala

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigerian Finance Minister, has called on leaders in Africa to muster the political will to tackle the bane of political corruption infecting neophyte democracies on the continent.

She acknowledged that there are problems with organising elections in Africa; nonetheless, the democratic processes are being strengthened in many parts of the continent.

?But the key issue which is not discussed is how to minimise political corruption from infecting our democracies,? she noted.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala, who is also the Nigerian Coordinating Minister of the Economy, made the call during a lecture on: ?What Africa should do to claim the 21?st Century,? at the 2nd John A. Kufuor Global Development Series 2013 in Accra on Friday.

She said leaders in Africa need to do a lot of work to tackle corruption in government procurement, to develop transparent judicial systems, and to build a vibrant civil society.

?The continent has come a long way from the turbulence of the 1980s and 1990s and today, many African countries are now multi-party democracies, but without accountable governments and strong institutions, the continent will not claim this 21st century.?

She observed that said the problem to the Africans fledgling democracies is political corruption, pondering: ?No one wants to discuss this big problem of how we finance the democratic process? How do we finance election campaigns and political parties? And where do the resources come from??

She said in many developing countries, what people are beginning to observe is that there is close relationship between politics and business.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala noted that businesses provide financial support to get their politicians elected and then in turn, they get substantial favours which help them to recoup some of their investments.

Some of these favours, she observed that could be very ?distortionary? for the economy; it can mean granting tariff protection to a few friends, but which can be to the detriment of the majority of the population.

The one time World Bank Managing Director said the problem of businesses financing political parties is not unique to Africa, but also a live issue in Western democracies, such as in the United Kingdom (UK).

She quoted Transparency International recently completed national opinion survey in the UK as saying ?political parties were judged the most corrupt among a list of key sectors of UK public life?.

For the UK, they also found that 60 per cent of donations to political parties came from wealthy individuals, businesses or unions, ?there was also concern that a few wealthy individuals and groups may be able to buy influence by making large donations,? she said.

The Finance Minister pointed out that leaders of the continent really needs an urgent review of the approach to financing democratic elections which is cleaner and more transparent.

She expressed wonder why the continent could not spearhead the crusade having witnessed and learnt the mistakes of the western world, adding: ?Why can?t Africa lead the way in this endeavour and avoid the mistakes of the Western countries??

The John A. Kufuor Foundation aims at fashioning out measures to promote good governance on the continent through electoral monitoring, strengthening electoral systems, conflict mediation and resolution, promoting accountability and transparency and deepening democratic structures.

The focus is on economic and social development bringing the expertise of international leaders in areas such as economic diversification, debt relief, public private partnerships and the provision of social safety nets, to provide the critical tools needed to ensure sustainable development for countries and businesses across Africa.

The Foundation is premised on three inter-related pillars; Leadership, Governance and Development and will collaborate with state institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector, the media and development partners in order to achieve its vision of effective leadership, democratic governance and sustainable development in Africa.

Easy DIY Craft: How To Create Your Own Curtains

Entry #2141, February 25, 2013

Curtains add so much to your home interiors.? They help with lighting control, steadying the temperature and a great overall finish to the room.? But how many times have we (ourselves) gone to the department store only to get there and find out that what we need are out of stock or the wrong size for our windows or unpleasing to look at.? Wouldn?t it be nice to be able to get curtains that you actually like, that are the proper size, and will last?? Here, you will learn how to create your own custom curtains to fit your specific needs.

How To Create Curtains

How To Create Curtains

Directions

1)????? You want to measure the size of your windows, to help you decide on how much fabric you may need and how long you want your curtains to be.

2)????? Next, you will need to purchase the fabric for the curtains and you can go to any fabric store of your choice or even if you think it is convenient for you, you can order them online.

3)????? If you have a basic window then 7? X 9? (7 by 9 foot) of tapestry should be a good enough amount to cover it.? Measure how low you want the fabric that you purchased, then slice that fabric in half and begin to sow the hem on the edges.

  1. To help keep the fabric together while you sow take pin needles and pin the fabric down in a line that you will use to sow the hem.
  2. ?If you are covering larger windows then you will need more fabric for covering (add at least 1-2 feet to the measurements when purchasing the fabric).? But you will continue with the same process as stated above.

4)????? Hem the top of the curtain with a loop, so that the curtain will be able to easily slip through the rod.

5)????? Now, if you would like to have a double-layer reversible curtain purchase two different fabrics and sow the backs of the fabrics together.? After the fabrics have become one then treat them as such and do the steps above and there you shall have your double-sided, layered, reversible curtain.

There is nothing like upgrading your space with a change in the window treatments.? It is cost effective, saves you time and money plus these curtains will be your custom made creations.? Have fun with it and try it out!

UFC 157 prelims: Dennis Bermudez, Matt Grice deliver Fight of the Year candidate

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- UFC 157's preliminary card started with a bang and ended with a snoozer on Saturday.

Dennis Bermudez took a tight split decision in a fight that will go down as a fight of the year candidate. He won it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 over Matt Grice.

Bermudez fell into full mount early in the round and rained punches down on Grice's head, but Grice got out and came back late in the round by leveling Bermudez with a left hook.

But it's the third round of the fight that the MMA world will remember. Bermudez threw everything but the kitchen sink at Grice, but Grice hung in. He continued to throw kicks and punches at Bermudez right up until the horn sounded and a grateful crowd in Anaheim came to its feet.

?That was insane. Somewhere around the second round I woke up and thought 'Oh, I?m in a fight, I think I am in California somewhere'," Bermudez said. "If he?d given me a reason, maybe I would have quit. I had that battle inside me where I maybe could have [quit] but I won that battle and from there got back into the fight."

Brendan Schaub used takedowns, and little else, to beat Lavar Johnson 30-27 on all the judges cards in the final fight of the prelims. With the crowd booing, Schaub repeatedly took down Johnson, who had little takedown defense.

Michael Chiesa continued his unbeaten streak with a rear naked choked of Anton Kuivanen. Chiesa rolled through to get into perfect position. He sunk in a rear naked choke that turned Kuivanen's face red. Kuivanen tapped at 2:29 in the second round.

Sam Stout managed another decision win, taking the split 29-28, 28-29 over Caros Fodor. 14 of his fights have ended with judges cards being read, and this decision put his record to 19-8.

Kenny Robertson made quick work of Brock Jardine. He stopped him with a knee bar at 2:57 in the first round.

"Sometime you gotta go with what you are handed. He was on top of me but didn?t have a great posture," Robertson said after the fight. "I saw the opening, so I grabbed his leg and hyper-extended it and he verbally submitted. I?ll take it. It is a first round win in the UFC."

For the card's opener, Nah-Shon Burrell and Yuri Villefort put on a thrilling bout that ended with Burrell taking the decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. Villefort had a strong first round, grabbing Burrell for two different submission attempts. But Burrell fought back in the second round, busting up Villefort's face with smart boxing. In the final round, Villefort grabbed a heel hook, but left his face open. Burrell used the opportunity to punch Villefort several time.

After the thriller by Burrell and Villefort, Neil Magny and Jon Manley's bout was a let down for the crowd in Anaheim. They spent much of the bout in a clinch, with Manley trying for a takedown that never came. Magny took the bout with better striking as the bout wore on.

Chemical link to otter penis problem

Otters' reproductive organs may be affected by chemicals in our waterways, according to scientists.

Experts studying the reproductive health of the mammals in England and Wales were concerned to find a decrease in the weight of otters' penis bones.

Other health problems in males included an increase in undescended testicles and cysts on sperm-carrying tubes.

Experts suggest that, based on previous research, the changes could be linked to hormone-disrupting chemicals.

The study, funded by the Environment Agency, was co-authored by the Chemicals, Health and Environment (CHEM) Trust and the Cardiff University Otter Project, and features on BBC One series Countryfile.

"We were surprised to see the reduction in the baculum weight," said co-author Dr Elizabeth Chadwick, project manager at the Cardiff University Otter Project, referring to the bone found in males' penises.

"[It's] certainly something that needs further investigation."

During the 1970s, England's otter population plummeted, the decline attributed to high levels of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in rivers. However contaminants such as organochlorine pesticides have mostly since been banned, and otter populations have steadily increased.

Scientists examined hundreds of dead otters in a post-mortem laboratory to test if existing traces of POPs in rivers were still having an effect on the animals' health.

But they found no association between these old chemicals and the animals' penis bones becoming lighter over time.

Instead the report speculates that some modern contaminants could be causing the abnormalities. Previous studies have linked Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) to changes in animals' reproductive organs, such as male penis size.

"It's from that that we're drawing a possible inference that some of these Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals may be the reason that baculum weight has changed," Dr Chadwick explained.

EDCs are a range of synthetic and natural chemicals that can affect animals' hormone systems, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Dr Chadwick said: "With many of these contaminants, there can be all sorts of different sources... so it might be things like drugs that we're taking and they flush through our sewerage systems and end up in the rivers."

She added that dust from industrial production travelling into the atmosphere could also carry contaminants that end up in rivers as rainfall, even travelling long distances between countries.

"Fantastic indicator species"

The current report adds to some scientists' concern about the feminisation of male animals, according to CHEM Trust.

For example, previous studies in the UK have linked now-restricted POPs with male fish producing eggs in their testes and female egg-yolk protein.

As top predators in the UK's river systems, otters are a "fantastic indicator species", explained Countryfile director Anna Jones, who has been following urban otters in Bristol for the programme.

"The health of an otter can reveal a lot about the health of the environment they live in, and the health of the fish," she said.

PENIS BONE FACTS

  • Humans do not have bones in their penises but many other primates do, including gorillas and chimpanzees
  • All male rodents have bones in their penises
  • The fossilised baculum of an extinct walrus was discovered in 2007 and measured 1.2m

Dr Chadwick added that health problems found in otters "could be a warning for all mammals really, which include us humans".

"People are very quick to say: otters are in our rivers. That must mean rivers are perfect, they're so clean, everything's fine again? but it's not really that simple," said Ms Jones.

"It's not just a clear-cut, rosy picture that all is well for otters just because they're back. There are still challenges."

In order to prove the link, scientists will now need to measure the EDCs present in the otters and their habitat.

Countryfile airs on BBC One on Sunday 24 February at 1900 GMT.

Laser mastery narrows down sources of superconductivity

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Identifying the mysterious mechanism underlying high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) remains one of the most important and tantalizing puzzles in physics. This remarkable phenomenon allows electric current to pass with perfect efficiency through materials chilled to subzero temperatures, and it may play an essential role in revolutionizing the entire electricity chain, from generation to transmission and grid-scale storage. Pinning down one of the possible explanations for HTS -- fleeting fluctuations called charge-density waves (CDWs) -- could help solve the mystery and pave the way for rapid technological advances.

Now, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have combined two state-of-the-art experimental techniques to study those electron waves with unprecedented precision in two-dimensional, custom-grown materials. The surprising results, published online February 24, 2013, in the journal Nature Materials, reveal that CDWs cannot be the root cause of the unparalleled power conveyance in HTS materials. In fact, CDW formation is an independent and likely competing instability.

"It has been difficult to determine whether or not dynamic or fluctuating CDWs even exist in HTS materials, much less identify their role," said Brookhaven Lab physicist and study coauthor Ivan Bozovic. "Do they compete with the HTS state, or are they perhaps the very essence of the phenomenon? That question has now been answered by targeted experimentation."

Custom-grown Superconductors

Electricity travels imperfectly through traditional metallic conductors, losing energy as heat due to a kind of atomic-scale friction. Impurities in these materials also cause electrons to scatter and stumble, but superconductors can overcome this hurdle -- assuming the synthesis process is precise.

For this experiment, Bozovic used a custom-built molecular beam epitaxy system at Brookhaven Lab to grow thin films of LaSrCuO, an HTS cuprate (copper-oxide) compound. The metallic cuprates, assembled one atomic layer at a time, are separated by insulating planes of lanthanum and strontium oxides, resulting in what's called a quasi-two-dimensional conductor. When cooled down to a low enough temperature -- less than 100 degrees Kelvin -- strange electron waves began to ripple through that 2D matrix. At even lower temperatures, these films became superconducting.

Electron Sea

"In quasi-two-dimensional metals, low temperatures frequently bring about interesting collective states called charge-density waves," Bozovic said. "They resemble waves rolling across the surface of a lake under a breeze, except that instead of water, here we actually have a sea of mobile electrons."

Once a CDW forms, the electron density loses uniformity as the ripples rise and fall. These waves can be described by familiar parameters: amplitude (height of the waves), wavelength (distance between waves), and phase (the wave's position on the material). Detecting CDWs typically requires high-intensity x-rays, such as those provided by synchrotron light sources like Brookhaven's NSLS and, soon, NSLS-II. And even then, the technique only works if the waves are essentially frozen upon formation. However, if CDWs actually fluctuate rapidly, they may escape detection by x-ray diffraction, which typically requires a long exposure time that blurs fast motion.

Measuring Rolling Waves

To catch CDWs in action, a research group at MIT led by physicist Nuh Gedik used an advanced ultrafast spectroscopy technique. Intense laser pulses called "pumps" cause excitations in the superconducting films, which are then probed by measuring the film reflectance with a second light pulse -- this is called a pump-probe process. The second pulse is delayed by precise time intervals, and the series of measurements allow the lifetime of the excitation to be determined.

In a more sophisticated variant of the technique, largely pioneered by Gedik, the standard single pump beam is replaced by two beams hitting the surface from different sides simultaneously. This generates a standing wave of controlled wavelength in the film, but it disappears rapidly as the electrons relax back into their original state.

This technique was applied to the atomically perfect LaSrCuO films synthesized at Brookhaven Lab. In films with a critical temperature of 26 degrees Kelvin (the threshold beyond which the superconductivity breaks down), the researchers discovered two new short-lived excitations -- both caused by fluctuating CDWs.

Gedik's technique even allowed the researchers to record the lifetime of CDW fluctuations -- just 2 picoseconds (a millionth of a millionth of a second) under the coldest conditions and becoming briefer as the temperatures rose. These waves then vanished entirely at about 100 Kelvin, actually surviving at much higher temperatures than superconductivity.

Ruling out a Suspect

The researchers then hunted for those same signatures in cuprate films with slightly different chemical compositions and a greater density of mobile electrons. The results were both unexpected and significant for the future of HTS research.

"Interestingly, the superconducting sample with the highest critical temperature, about 39 Kelvin, showed no CDW signatures at all," Gedik said.

The consistent emergence of CDWs would have bolstered the conjecture that they play an essential role in high-temperature superconductivity. Instead, the new technique's successful detection of such electron waves in one sample but not in another (with even higher critical temperature) indicates that another mechanism must be driving the emergence of HTS.

"Results like this bring us closer to understanding the mystery of HTS, considered by many to be one of the greatest problems in physics today," Bozovic said. "The source of this extraordinary phenomenon is slowly but surely running out of places to hide."

Love Of Family & Home: Cleaning & Organizing Under The Kitchen ...

Hey Friends!

Have y'all had a good weekend?

The snow & ice that we got on Thursday, was pretty much melted the next day. Things have warmed up a bit & I'm starting to believe that spring is really just around the corner! Hopefully that is the last of our winter weather!

I wanted to drop in today, to share my project for this week's "Clean It" Challenge. Although this project isn't going to excite many of you, it was a project that was much needed in our kitchen! You see, even though our kitchen looks like this on the outside......

Things aren't quite so clean & pretty on the inside......

Exhibit A: Under The Kitchen Sink

Talk about "Keepin' It Real"....

This space was seriously A NIGHTMARE!!! As you can probably imagine, I couldn't ever find anything without digging for it. When I would start digging, things would start falling out. ?It was driving me batty & my husband wasn't thrilled about this so called disaster area under the sink either. Thankfully, this challenge gave me the motivation I needed to take control of this space!

The first thing I did was take EVERYTHING out!

Then I was left to sort through this mess.....
I got rid of the items we didn't need. I then sorted the rest into categories.

To brighten up the area & make things feel fresh & clean, I primed & painted the inside of the cabinet as well.

I picked up some inexpensive shelf liner at Walmart......
Once the paint was dry, I lined the bottom of the cabinet.....
This dark, dirty, dreadful area under the sink was already starting to feel clean & organized!! It's amazing what some small changes & can make!

Then I organized & put things back.....

I added an inexpensive paper towel holder to the inside of the cabinet door. And purchased a couple of Lazy Susan's to house all of my cleaning supplies. Not only does everything fit nice & neat, but I can easily reach my supplies with a simple turn.
Before, our washcloths & dish towels woud rest on the kitchen sink. Even folded nicely, it drove me crazy! So, I added some command hooks to the inside of my other cabinet door in order to be able to hang them instead.

I purchased an inexpensive wire shelf from Walmart to give me some more storage space without taking up room on the cabinet floor. It helped tremendously.?

I also bought some storage containers to house various items that I kept under the sink. Each container holds specific items so that they are easy to find. The storage containers fit perfectly on the new wire shelf.

And just so you can have a true appreciation for this project, let's take one more look at the "Before".....

And the "After"......

Much better, right?!

Can you spot the other change that I made?

I decided to paint the inside of the cabinet doors a beige color just for fun! I used some paint I already had on hand, so it didn't cost me anything & I kind like how it coordinates with the shelf liner on the bottom of the cabinet.

Well, what do you think?!

Do you struggle with keeping the area under your kitchen sink organized?

Is there anyone else out there who has a pretty kitchen on the outside, but not so much on the inside?!

I would be lying if I told you that the rest of my kitchen cabinets were cleaned & organized. They are all pretty much a disaster! BUT, my goal is to change all that before this year is up! I'm gonna SLOWLY tackle each one of them until they are all as clean & organized as my cabinet under the sink!

To read about our kitchen makeover click HERE.

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for our "Clean It" Linky Party!! Come share your cleaning and/or organizing projects with us & be inspired by others!!

We can't wait to see what you've been working on!!

If you link up on just?ONE?of our blogs, your project will be see on all?NINE?sites!! So, get those projects completed & get your posts ready!!

If you don't have a blog, I would still?LOVE?for you to join in!! Share a picture of your project with me on my?Facebook Page! I will be sharing some of my favorites over the course of the week!

I hope you all have a beautiful Sunday!!

In the early 2000?s, the music industry, in particular the communities of hiphop and rnb, observed the appearance of what we call the ?super music producers?, accounting for frontrunners: Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins or even The Neptunes.

What is a ?super producer?? the most reliable interpretation of their distinction with a ?simple? producer will certainly take the illustration of what we call a ?supermodel? in fashion, for instance Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer or Naomi Campbell. You know these legendary super-models as well as anyone else and you can see all of them on all of the catwalks. To be brief: safe values.

This was the very same thing in the music business: there had been ?big? producers, risk free, that directed all of the the projects and also were looked for by the best known singers and also rappers. This is always less hazardous for record label to utilize a well known music producer rather than a beginner. The well recognized producer delivered a several of award winning singles, in theory. Considering back then commonly big names sold cd.

But, the music industry, after the start of the decade totally changed. First, consumers don?t actually pay for disk anymore.

For that reason the record labels give minimum money for a project. And apparently, record companies are not wishing to spend money between $ 100 000 to $ 300 000 for just one single beat, as was the case during the period of the golden years of music producers. The disks tend to not sell and the internet grows. To deal with not legal downloading of their artists, record companies create or connect with statutory download systems and want to impose their visibility in this online world, which has been escaping their control for a long time.

But the rise up of the internet in addition has allowed the expansion of numerous not known producers as good as, if not a lot better than, ?Super Producers?.

All these producers have paying attention to the growth of the Internet, which has helped those to sell their beats online. Which allows them to contact and also work with singer on a local scale as well as a world wide one. A producer from Nyc can even promote beats to an artist in Japan. It is really more simple for them to obtain a pretty good reputation to get a career. For the artists, this makes an important difference! They can buy beats online in their house for their album, EP or mixtape for affordable prices; definitely not those applied by the ?super producers?.

Record companies pay a specific attention to this modern sector. They buy beats online as well. And right now we could notice that a few internet based producers receive hired by majors.

The great time of super producers such as the epoch of super models goes away bit by bit, offering option to this modern market led by producers who, generally, have not a single thing to envy to the ?super producers?.

You can buy beats online too, I strongly recommend this one. Professional , you can buy beats (leasing and exclusive) and get free beats in all different style from hiphop, pop to dance.
