Dear Humans,

I have hundreds of paper scraps and computer files with future blog posts. I recently browsed through almost everything I have ever published or scribbled about self-improvement, spirituality, and happiness. Almost everything comes down to these ten lessons:

10. Laugh at anything and everything. Go into everything with an adventurous spirit. Find the joy in every situation.

9. Slow down. Sleep and relax. Simplify and focus. It?s okay to have an easy schedule, to say no to people, to cut responsibilities, to decline big titles, to buy fewer things, and to refuse to participate in the madness of this fast treadmill we call the world.

8. Be present. Take in and really savor whatever is right in front of you, whether it?s a friend, a conversation, a dish, a sight, or a song. Let everything else fade for the moment. No matter how often you talk about it or how elaborately you plan it, the future never arrives?it?s always a step away.

7. Love and accept everyone. Better to overdo it than underdo it. Better to do it early than do it too late. Life is about people. They make your world go ?round. Abuse them and your world stops. Cherish them and your world soars.

6. Trust what?s natural. Never forget that we are a part of that beautiful thing called Nature, not apart from it. Look to it for answers. As long as you have a kind and honest tone: Don?t force things, don?t fake things, don?t cover up things. You have the right to think and feel the way you do. Trust instincts. It?s in you already. Be real, raw, intensely human, intensely genuine, intensely natural.

5. Be the best you. Be different. Go your own way. Don?t ever trap yourself into a title, age, race, or sex. If people can predict you, you?re failing. Be free-flowing. Accept your weaknesses and develop your strengths. Focus on your passions, find your purpose, and leave your legacy. You are a gift to the world. Don?t ever shred that gift by living someone else?s life.

4. Everything is a lesson. Everything is a chance for growth. Take risks. Dare yourself. Try. Look backward to see how much you have learned from failure. Look forward with the comfort that no matter what you do, you have nothing to lose and another lesson to gain. Keep learning, keep growing.

3. What you give is what you get. Karma. Friendship. Work. Health. Everything. The universe is interconnected as if everything were a predictable input-output system. Don?t like something in your life? You need to give more. It?s the simplest recipe. Believe it.

2. Balance. Keep everything in moderation. Listen to everyone, listen to no one. Lessons overlap, lessons contradict. Keep switching gears, changing levels, and tinkering with the scale until you get it right. When you do, mess it up and go again. It?s more fun that way.

1. Let go. Let it be. Life goes on. When you?re giving everything and nothing?s changing yet and you?re searching but seeing no lesson yet, just remember that things happen for a reason. Be grateful for the cards you?re dealt. Have hope. Someone once said, ?Everything will be okay in the end. If it?s not okay, it?s not the end.? With everything: do your best, sit back, and wait for the end.

Astronomers say that there are billions of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy (+video)

A team of European astronomers say that about 40 percent of red dwarf stars - the most common type of star in the Milky Way - have at least one planet whose temperatures would allow liquid water on the surface.

Astronomers hunting for rocky planets with the right temperature to support life estimate there may be tens of billions of them in our galaxy alone.

Skip to next paragraph A team of planet hunters led by astronomers at the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz and the Carnegie Institution of Washington has announced the discovery of a planet orbiting a nearby star, Gliese 581, at a distance that places it squarely in the middle of the star's 'habitable zone.'

A European team said on Wednesday that about 40 percent of red dwarf stars - the most common type in the Milky Way - have a so-called "super-Earth" planet orbiting in a habitable zone that would allow water to flow on the surface.

Since there are around 160 billion red dwarfs in the Milky Way, the number of worlds that are potentially warm enough and wet enough to support life is enormous.

Xavier Bonfils of the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics in Grenoble, the leader of the team, said the 40 percent figure was at the high end of what had been expected and the finding underscored the prevalence of small rocky planets.

His team is the first to calculate the number of super-Earths - planets with a mass between one and 10 times the Earth - in such habitable zones, although previous research has found the Milky Way to be awash with planets.

Red dwarfs, which are faint and cool compared to the Sun, account for around 80 percent of the stars in the Milky Way.

After studying 102 of these stars in the southern skies using a European Southern Observatory telescope in Chile, Bonfils and colleagues found rocky planets were far more common than massive gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system.

However, the rocky worlds spinning around red dwarfs are not necessarily cosy places for alien forms of life.

Because reds dwarfs are much cooler than the sun, any planets with liquid water will need to be orbiting much closer to the star than the Earth is from the Sun. That may mean they are bathed in damaging X-ray and ultraviolet radiation.

Scientists aim to take a closer look at some of the Earth-like planets as they pass in front of nearby red dwarfs, which should yield information about their atmospheres and help in the search for possible signs of life.

The research was presented in a paper to be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.?

[A] stirring, emotional portrait of a high school football team in the impoverished neighborhood of North Memphis, Tenn.

It's a bit too long and a bit too vague at times, but this is a film about dedication, progress and the bond of human effort. It just also happens to include football.

"Undefeated'' needs less of what we know we've seen (the football stuff) and more of the players' and coaches' lives, which even if we feel we've seen, we haven't.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

It's a surprisingly moving, emotional film, even for those who (like me) know little of football; by its end, you just might be blinking away a few tears.

Peers empathetically into a tiny world and opens it up for its audience, who, in turn, will surely open their hearts to it.

Combines the gritty reality of "Hoop Dreams" and the heart of "Friday Night Lights," along with a dash of "The Blind Side."

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope - all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make -- and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts 'Undefeated' above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney's personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there's no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don't meet more of Courtney's players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And "Undefeated" makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

...an inspirational and often touching film that lets us get to know a dedicated coach who has faith in his players and delivers what he promises (almost).

This is a film that doesn't cater only to the traditional football fan.

Kuwait names new central bank governor

But this beast - a new genus of digger wasp, collected in the 1930s from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi but undescribed until now - may just be the coolest yet.

Pitch black, with massive, sickle-shaped jaws, the beast has been named Megalara garuda. Garuda refers to the part-human, part-eagle mythical symbol of Indonesia. Nothing is known of the wasp's behaviour, but discoverers Lynn Kimsey of the University of California, Davis, and Michael Ohl of the Museum f?r Naturkunde in Berlin, Germany, speculate that the jaws may be used for grasping females during copulation.

Though seasonal rains wet and darken Titan?s surface, some areas become brighter after a storm, reported Jason Barnes of the University of Idaho on March 19. He and his colleagues studied Cassini images of Titan after a September 2010 cloudburst. Following an initial dark phase that lasted for a few weeks, two areas, called Hetpet Regio and Yalaing Terra, became whiter. The light terrain persisted for about a year before fading back to normal. ?At first I thought we might be seeing snow,? Barnes said. But snow would first create brighter spots, then melt and darken the surface. Instead, Barnes thinks that evaporating liquids might cool Titan?s surface, causing frost to form. ?Nadia Drake

Kevin Webster, a graduate student on the team, reported March 20 on elevated levels of atmospheric methane measured at a site in Greenland. Webster and his team aren?t sure what?s producing the methane, but they?re going back to Greenland this summer to try and find out. The important changes to the way scientists name new plants that took effect on 1 January 2012 included the fall of the so-called Latin requirement - a stipulation that descriptions or diagnoses of new species had to be in Latin.

The new rules make it possible to take full advantage of an ongoing revolution in how botanists and mycologists verify that a particular species is indeed new to science: Many studies now routinely include the sequencing of short DNA regions that will amplify easily, even when the DNA comes from old specimens.

Such "barcoding" sequences can be used to confirm a suspected new species as long as related species that already have a scientific name are also being sequenced for the same DNA stretch.

There is no standard Latin vocabulary for describing DNA barcoding, yet in English, there is.

In an article in the open access journal PhytoKeys, botanists Natalia Filipowicz (Medical University of Gda?sk), Michael Nee (New York Botanical Garden), and Susanne Renner (University of Munich), now provide the first English-language diagnosis of a new species that relies exclusively on DNA data.

Their publication of a new species in the Solanaceae genus Brunfelsia also includes a traditional morphology-based description and pictures of the plant, but the researchers trust that "molecular diagnoses" will become a standard feature in future taxon descriptions.

The DNA sequences generated for the study have all been deposited in the public database GenBank, enabling other researchers to make use of them.

Whatever form of home improvement remodeling you eventually decide to engage in, it is realy important to make sure that you are making the most of your money. This should be done by ensuring that the materials you are using are of the highest quality, to avoid your having to replace materials soon after the project is done. Furthermore, working with a qualified and reputable home improvement company is imperative to make certain that you are getting value for your money.

Home improvement means that you are adding value to your home, which translates as a prudent investment. You get the added advantage of living in a beautiful environment that affords you maximum comfort.

Could new $30 million tower be the future of world cities?

Earth Day co-founder Denis Hayes and architect Jason McLennan are behind a project that aims to build the biggest "green" office building in the U.S.

SEATTLE?? An office building that lasts 250 years with no monthly?electricity or water?bills? It may sound like an environmentalist?s pipe dream, but it will soon be a reality, say the builders of what they hope will be the biggest office tower in the nation that produces as much water and electricity as it consumes.

Currently rising from a pit in downtown Seattle, the $30 million, six-story ?living building? is being spearheaded by Denis Hayes and Jason McLennan, who believe they can save the world one building at a time by reducing the massive energy appetites of modern cities.

"Eighty-two percent of Americans, and more than half of humanity, now live in cities -- none of which have been designed for sustainability,"?said Hayes, who?in 1970 helped create Earth Day, which has developed into the planet?s unofficial holiday.

Hayes, 67,?now heads the?Bullitt Foundation, an environmental nonprofit that intends to practice what it preaches by moving into the building when it?s completed, currently planned for November.?

The Bullitt Center, as the building will be known, is designed to use just a third of the energy consumed by?a typical office building its size. It also aims to minimize its resource footprint by generating electricity from solar power, collecting water from rainfall and treating all sewage and wastewater onsite. It also will have no parking for cars -- just racks for bikes.

It won?t be entirely off the electrical grid, so that it can make it through the periods when there isn?t enough sunlight to meet the tenants? demands. But it will later repay those withdrawals, said McLennan, 38, who is CEO of the Northwest-based International Living Future Institute.

"In the summer it gives excess energy to the (power) grid and in the winter it gets it back when we can't generate enough," he said. "It nets out at zero on an annual basis."

As for the water system, Seattle law requires the building be hooked up to its water supply but the goal is to take in enough rainwater to make ends meet.

Standard buildings are a "negative gift" to taxpayers, he said, because of the burdens they impose in terms of pollution and wasted energy.? "We clean up our own messes ... that's the big picture," he said.?

Hayes said that in addition to being self-sufficient, the building will make sense financially, explaining that while it may cost a third more to build than a traditional office building, it is designed to last centuries longer.

"We are using the Bullitt Center to explore what is possible on the cutting edge of green, using existing technology and constrained by reasonable economics," said Hayes. "Durability is key. The average building lasts 40 years, we're going for 250 years. ... It's a fundamentally different approach."

Getting the building to last 2 1/2 centuries, McLennan said, comes down to three factors: quality building materials; careful and clever detailing from the architecture firm; and high quality construction from the contractor.???

Ultimately, the partners hope to get the Bullitt Center certified under the ?Living Building Challenge,? which is run by the Living Future Institute.

In order to be certified as a living building, developments much meet benchmarks in seven performance areas. The slideshow at the top of the story?illustrates those areas, each of which includes several "imperatives," such as "car-free living" and "urban agriculture."

So far, about 140 projects are registered for the Living Building Challenge, including?a handful in Seattle. Only?four have been certified as meeting the challenge criteria so far, as many are under?construction or have not yet met the?year of occupancy necessary for?certification. Most are small projects;?a few are office buildings, but none is as large as the Bullitt Center.

Net-zero homes have been around since the 1970s, but McLennan noted that it's "much harder to achieve this in a larger building, as the larger the building the more difficult it is to generate all your own energy and harvest all your water.?Scale makes it challenging."

If the Bullitt Center is certified as a living building, it will be the largest net-zero office building in the U.S., McLennan said. A three-story office building also is under construction in Pittsburgh, the future home of the Phipps Conservatory, he noted.

Here are some of the major pieces that Hayes and McLennan say will enable the building to meet the challenge:

• Solar panels?on the roof that?extend over the sides of the building will provide the electricity. (Panels have gained enough efficiency in recent years to make them operable even in places with as much cloud cover as Seattle.)
• 26 geothermal?wells, each 400 feet deep, will?pump underground air that's a constant 55 degrees into the building to help offset heating costs in winter.?
• Rainwater will be collected in a 56,000 gallon basement?cistern. Purification steps include a special membrane for the roof, ultrafiltration and ultraviolet light. Because the process has to be tested before Seattle will consider authorizing it for drinking water, sinks and showers, Hayes calls it "the last big hurdle" for the center.
• Sewage will be sent to?10 basement?composters and then shipped offsite to become fertilizer.
• All timber frames and other wood will be certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The criteria for certification, McLennan said, are "more high performing" than the standards of the better known LEED, for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,?which were developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and adopted by many developers across the country.

"It's time to move the ball farther," he said, adding that "single projects can change the way the design community thinks."

The U.S. Green Building Council said it welcomes the living building concept and has worked closely with McLennan, who also runs the council's Seattle chapter.

"It's more challenging," acknowledged Scot Horst, the council's vice president for LEED. "Most buildings that attempted but couldn't meet the (living building)?criteria were still LEED certified."

Even a cutting-edge development like the Bullitt Center can have difficulty meeting the living building benchmarks. For example, it is replacing a single-story bar and thereby covering up the views from apartments behind it.?

That would appear?to violate the Living Building Challenge's?"equity" imperative: "The project may not block access to, nor diminish, the quality of fresh air, sunlight and natural waterways for any member of society or adjacent developments."

But McLennan notes the apartments went up knowing that the Bullitt property would some day be developed. "The windows for the adjacent building were placed along an alley where development was always expected and part of city zoning for that site," he said.

Hayes said tenants will get a rent reduction in return. "It's not a perfect solution but we're doing what we can," he said.

McLennan added that the upsides -- more diversity and added jobs in the area -- outweigh?any downside.

Eco-friendly projects aren't immune to the community frictions that often greet new developments.

In Wallingford, a?neighborhood of homes and low-rise commercial buildings in Seattle, a?green developer inspired by the Bullitt project says it needs to exceed the city's height limit in order to make its building cost effective.

That has angered neighbors like Katherine Bragdon, herself an environmental activist, and put the project on hold as city government deals with the opposition.

"No developer should be given special privileges to exceed current zoning by 44 percent, impair views that belong to the public, and trump years of work and consideration that have gone into neighborhood planning," Bragdon said. "I?ve worked on a number of conservation campaigns around the country over the past two decades so I want to stress that I respect and value the green building aspect of this project. ? But I also believe that we can?t trample over one good cause (well-planned neighborhoods, public process, fair zoning) for another."
