THE VILLAGE, Okla. ? It hasn?t happened in a half century.

The city of The Village is in the midst of a unique housing boom with several major developments currently under construction.

Right now, three separate subdivisions and more than 200 homes are in the works.

That?s something that hasn?t happened since the 1960s.

?We?re thankful they?re building homes and people are looking at moving into The Village,? Village city manager Bruce Stone said.

Specifically, the Hawthorne Addition will feature 126 new homes, replacing the old Vintage Lakes apartments that were condemned, fenced off and torn down in recent years.?

That also cleared the way for an adjacent gated community, The Villas.

?You know, the apartment complex was a huge disincentive to building on the land in this area,? Stone said.

Lastly, several acres west of May are ready for 38 new homes replacing the long abandoned and now demolished Sunset Elementary.

?I just think it?s wonderful,? Village resident Peg Alleman said.

Peg has lived in The Village since the ?60s.

She said all the new homes are a huge improvement.

?Oh heavens yes, by far. It?s lovely,? Peg said.

The best news, The Village isn?t alone.

?Our building permits are up considerably,? Central Oklahoma Homebuilder Association President Kurt Dinnes said.

In Oklahoma City, new home construction is up 40 percent over the same time last year.

?Right now consumer confidence is high, builder confidence is high, so we are seeing a resurgence of home building in this area,? Dinnes said.

The local housing growth also ranks way above the national norm.
