Announcement on Herbalife, 500 jobs expected Wednesday

The former Dell plant in Winston-Salem could house a new facility for Herbalife.

Gov. Bev Perdue is scheduled to be in Forsyth County Wednesday for what?s expected to be an announcement that Herbalife Ltd. is bringing 500 jobs and a $100 million manufacturing and distribution hub to Winston-Salem.

Several sources connected to the Herbalife deal said they anticipated an announcement Wednesday but could not confirm details.

Alana Allen, deputy press secretary for Perdue, said the governor is planning on traveling to Forsyth County Wednesday, but her office could not immediately release more information.

As The Business Journal reported in November, Herbalife International (NYSE: HLF), which makes weight loss, nutritional and personal care products, was deciding between Winston-Salem and Atlanta for the $100 million hub that the California-based company would use to bulk up East Coast operations.

Winston-Salem?s site would be in the former Dell Inc. plant in Forsyth County. Executives for Herbalife toured a site on the northeast side of Atlanta, but would have to do a build-to-suit project for that site.

Both the Winston-Salem City Council and the Forsyth County commissioners have approved incentives packages for Herbalife, which together total about $3.45 million. The state could offer more than $10.5 million in incentives as well.
