The Consumer: The Drug-Dose Gender Gap

Most sleeping pills are designed to knock you out for eight hours. When the Food and Drug Administration was evaluating a new short-acting pill for people to take when they wake up in the middle of the night, agency scientists wanted to know how much of the drug would still be in users? systems come morning.

Blood tests uncovered a gender gap: Men metabolized the drug, Intermezzo, faster than women. Ultimately the F.D.A. approved a 3.5 milligram pill for men, and a 1.75 milligram pill for women.

The active ingredient in Intermezzo, zolpidem, is used in many other sleeping aids, including Ambien. But it wasn?t until earlier this month that the F.D.A. reduced doses of Ambien for women by half.

Sleeping pills are hardly the only medications that may have unexpected, even dangerous, effects in women. Studies have shown that women respond differently than men to many drugs, from aspirin to anesthesia. Researchers are only beginning to understand the scope of the issue, but many believe that as a result, women experience a disproportionate share of adverse, often more severe, side effects.

?This is not just about Ambien ? that?s just the tip of the iceberg,? said Dr. Janine Clayton, director for the Office of Research on Women?s Health at the National Institutes of Health. ?There are a lot of sex differences for a lot of drugs, some of which are well known and some that are not well recognized.?

Until 1993, women of childbearing age were routinely excluded from trials of new drugs. When the F.D.A. lifted the ban that year, agency researchers noted that because landmark studies on aspirin in heart disease and stroke had not included women, the scientific community was left ?with doubts about whether aspirin was, in fact, effective in women for these indications.?

Because so many drugs were tested mostly or exclusively in men, scientists may know little of their effects on women until they reach the market. A Government Accountability Office study found that 8 of 10 drugs removed from the market from 1997 through 2000 posed greater health risks to women.

For example, Seldane, an antihistamine, and the gastrointestinal drug Propulsid both triggered a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia more often in women than in men. Many drugs still on the market cause this arrhythmia more often in women, including antibiotics, antipsychotics, anti-malarial drugs and cholesterol-lowering drugs, Dr. Clayton said. Women also tend to use more medications than men.

The sex differences cut both ways. Some drugs, like the high blood pressure drug Verapamil and the antibiotic erythromycin, appear to be more effective in women. On the other hand, women tend to wake up from anesthesia faster than men and are more likely to experience side effects from anesthetic drugs, according to the Society for Women?s Health Research.

Women also react differently to alcohol, tobacco and cocaine, studies have found.

It?s not just because women tend to be smaller than men. Women metabolize drugs differently because they have a higher percentage of body fat and experience hormonal fluctuations and the monthly menstrual cycle. ?Some drugs are more water-based and like to hang out in the blood, and some like to hang out in the fat tissue,? said Wesley Lindsey, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Auburn University, who is a co-author of a paper on sex-based differences in drug activity.

?If the drug is lipophilic? ? attracted to fat cells ? ?it will move into those tissues and hang around for longer,? Dr. Lindsey added. ?The body won?t clear it as quickly, and you?ll see effects longer.?

There are also sex differences in liver metabolism, kidney function and certain gastric enzymes. Oral contraceptives, menopause and post-menopausal hormone treatment further complicate the picture. Some studies suggest, for example, that when estrogen levels are low, women may need higher doses of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers to lower blood pressure, because they have higher levels of proteins that cause the blood vessels to constrict, said Kathryn Sandberg, director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease at Georgetown.

Many researchers say data on these sex differences must be gathered at the very beginning of a drug?s development ? even before trials on human subjects begin.

?The path to a new drug starts with the basic science ? you study an animal model of the disease, and that?s where you discover a drug target,? Dr. Sandberg said. ?But 90 percent of researchers are still studying male animal models of the disease.?

There have been improvements. In an interview, Dr. Robert Temple, with the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the F.D.A., said the agency?s new guidelines in 1993 called for studies of sex differences at the earliest stages of drug development, as well as for analysis of clinical trial data by sex.

He said early research on an irritable bowel syndrome drug, alosetron (Lotronex), suggested it would not be effective in men. As a result, only women were included in clinical trials, and it was approved only for women. (Its use is restricted now because of serious side effects.)

But some scientists say drug metabolism studies with only 10 or 15 subjects are too small to pick up sex differences. Even though more women participate in clinical trials than in the past, they are still underrepresented in trials for heart and kidney disease, according to one recent analysis, and even in cancer trials.

?The big problem is we?re not quite sure how much difference this makes,? Dr. Lindsey said. ?We just don?t have a good handle on it.?

PFT: Eagles' unlikely to decide on Vick soon

350x-2Reuters

The periodic concerns that come from the parents of boys (or from parents like President Obama who don?t and won?t have sons) regarding whether the young men entrusted to their care will create for some families a potential opportunity.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, for example, has no issue with parents not wanting their sons to play football, because if fewer boys play football it?s be easier for Jim Harbaugh?s son to get to the NFL.

?If President Obama feels that way, then there will be a little less competition for Jack Harbaugh for when he gets old enough,? Jim Harbaugh said Monday, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.? ?That?s the first thing that jumps in my mind if other parents are thinking that way.?

Jim Harbaugh is thinking that he definitely has a future football player in the household.

?[H]e?s a really big kid,? Jim Harbaugh said.? ?He?s got an enormous head. . . As soon as he grows into that head, he?s going to be something.? It?s early, but expectations are high for young Jack.?

Plenty of fathers throughout the country feel the same way.? With the football hierarchy more sensitive than ever regarding the dangers of concussions, the kids who play football now and in the future will see an unprecedented level of safety.? Even without those changes, plenty of kids will play football, either because their parents will want them to or when push comes to shove their parents won?t stop them from playing.

So even if fewer kids play at the youth level, there will still be 32 NFL teams and 120-plus Division I-A (or whatever they call it now) college programs handing out scholarships.? As Jim Harbaugh astutely points out, fewer players in the pipeline means fewer players jockeying for those spots.

#WIRED: A Digital History of Ryerson University | Ryerson Archives ...

??Computing will most undoubtedly prove to be the most significant development to technology in the second half of the twentieth century. The extent to which Ryerson students graduate with a firm understanding of this new and exciting field, will greatly affect their ability to contribute to society.??

Ryerson University began as a polytechnic institute devoted to the training of students in applied technology. This technical history has informed Ryerson?s identity and culture, playing a significant role in the way the University defines its relationship to the digital age. As we enter an era of ever changing technology and a digitally-connected society, a look back at the early days of computing at Ryerson highlights the development of a digital campus and its impact on the Ryerson way of life.

DAISY

The computer centre with DAISY and connected terminals.

Always at the forefront of innovation, Ryerson?s early use of computing technology began in the 1960s when Ryerson was one of the first institutions to acquire a general purpose computer, an IBM Model 360-30, affectionately nicknamed ?DAISY? (Direct Access Information System).

?Daisy? Chooses Miss Ryerson ?68?. One of the many ?jobs? DAISY performed. (The Rambler, Summer 1968)

It?s difficult to imagine a world without smart phones or even personal computers, but the early days of computing at Ryerson involved the use of one centralized system that students would line up to use. Eventually this changed to include the addition of terminals throughout campus that would connect via Bell phone lines to the main computer. The main functions were academic and administration assistance, including student registration, payroll, scheduling, grades, library circulation, and the occasional selection of Miss Ryerson.

DAISY was not without its quirks. Nearing the end of its?life-cycle the first model would confuse library punch cards and harass students with overdue notices on books that had been returned. In 1975 DAISY took the initiative of creating a brand new Journalism class consisting of three surprised students.

DAISY would be upgraded three times, 1967, 1969, and up to an IBM Model 360-65 in 1973, which contained 256 kilobytes of core memory and cost the annual amount of $404,000.

The process of running a ?job? or task included manually typing programming instructions into a ?punch? card, feeding the card into the computer terminal, which would then process the program and data, and print out the results. This process was called ?batching?, and would continue until the 1980s, when the University realized the technology was quickly becoming obsolete. The ever-increasing rate of change and the resulting obsolete formats is a factor which would continue to define digital technology into the?twenty-first?century.

THE YRCC

In 1974 the Joint York-Ryerson Computing Centre established the first cooperative computing centre in Canada with the objective of sharing expertise and reducing costs. This resulted in the end of DAISY, which was dismantled and returned to the American company from which it was leased. The first of its kind in Canada, the YRCC operated with the main computer at York and connected terminals at Ryerson.

In the late 70s, the demand for more computers and processing capabilities gave rise to student protests over the lack of computer resources. The computer centre was so overwhelmed that they implemented restrictions and quotas on accessing the computer mainframe. Each department would receive an allotment for its students to use throughout the semester; if a student ran out of credit, then they would have to petition for increased time. In 1979 the situation escalated to the point of violence, in which a student was stabbed in the arm with a pen when he attempted to use someone?s punch-card terminal.

In 1983, IBM donated $3.7 million worth of computer hardware and software to Ryerson, at the time the largest single donation to the institute. The equipment, an IBM 3033 processor, 300 terminals, five personal computers and advanced software, created an on-line interactive system and established the Ryerson Computing Centre.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE LIBRARY

Bard vs. Byte (The Ryerson Rambler, Fall 1981)

Bard vs. Byte (The Ryerson Rambler, Fall 1981)

Ryerson Library was an early adopter of computer technology on campus. The early days of libraries consisted of card catalogues and handwritten entries signing out books. In the second half of the 20th century, this rapidly changed to an electronic format that would alter the way knowledge was organized and retrieved.

For Ryerson Library the shift to digital began in 1968 when the library converted the author, title and catalogue data for all books to machine-readable form, implementing an electronic circulation control system to keep track of books. Students would no longer sign out books, but punch out computer cards.

In 1978, Ryerson library became the first library in North America to operate its circulation system on-line using DOBIS/LIBIS, a computerized library system developed by IBM in Europe. DOBIS (Dortmund Bibliotek System) replaced the dated Mohawk punch-card circulation system.

The circulation function involved the first-time use of barcode labels affixed to books and ID badges read by an IBM optical scanner. Throughout the 80s and 90s technological advancement in the library would continue, including the establishment of its first computer lab in 1982, as well as developments in subject indexing and electronic resources.

THE FUTURE

In the last quarter century Ryerson University has paved the way for technology-driven learning. This can most clearly be seen with the new Student Learning Centre, which promises to provide an interactive environment employing the latest in digital technology. Projects such as the Digital Media Zone act as an incubator for Ryerson students to collaborate in the design and implementation of digital tools and apps. Accessible technology has placed students at the centre of e-learning, furthering the role students have in shaping their education and campus environment. These developments would not be possible without the small but significant steps taken in the 1960s towards a progressive, digital future.

A family's dream home rises from the one they lost - KTIV 4 Sioux City

NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD (KTIV) -

There are those who say they have no reason to come back to Riv-R-Land Estates.? But one family says their community ties are stronger than mother nature's will.

And while floods never come at a good time for anyone, the Lenz family had just brought home a new baby in 2011 when flood waters started to rise.

"We'd seen it high before, didn't really believe it until it started happening," Todd Lenz said.

The Missouri River flooded their home, and damaged it beyond repair. They were devastated.

"What's gonna happen next? What do we do?" the Lenzs wondered.?

That's when members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City intervened.?

"The Lenz family out of our 1600 members are the only ones who lost their homes totally from the flood," Pastor David Zirpel from Redeemer Lutheran said.

Redeemer Lutheran Church members are used to helping out in times of disaster like hurricanes and?tornadoes. But the 2011 flood kept them close to home.

"So when the flood came up and one of our families lost their homes totally to the flood we decided to stay here and help them," Pastor?Zirpel said.?

"It was just unbelievable, just a snowball effect. Things started happening, and contacts were being made, and people were coming forward and all these volunteers were here," Jaime Lenz said.

Over ten months their church worked to rebuild their home on the spot their old one once stood. Sunday they celebrated with a special blessing, and with those who helped. They say the future now looks a lot different.

"It looks pretty promising, we're very blessed to meet all of our Redeemer friends and family and everyone involved in the project,"

The Lenz say they cannot forget this experience and say they plan to pay it forward by volunteering in the future.

Gold And Silver Truth-Seeking: Fundamentals & Opinions Are Useless

All general statements are untrue, [including the one above and this one]. There are exceptions to every general rule, so they cannot always be true.

There is truth to the consideration that all fundamentals and opinions are useless in the markets, as they pertain to timing, and timing plays a huge role when investing/trading. What fundamentals/opinions do is put one?s belief system into a context with regard to the market[s]. If one wants to profit from any belief, he/she is then pitted against the forces of the marketplace in their exercise.

If you know about the fundamentals, to whatever degree you believe, and/or if you have an opinion, from whatever source and however reliable or not, the question then becomes, ?What are you going to do about it?? Our premise topic, fundamentals and opinions are useless, goes back to what we have stated before:

It does not matter what others say about the market.
What matters is what the market says about others.

People are drawn to articles/information that reinforces their beliefs. Markets force people to put aside their bias and deal with what is, or else deal with the consequences if the bias/belief is in conflict. The market is, and always will be, the final arbiter of all ?facts? and ?opinions.?

The market is composed of all the known [and not so well-known] facts that affect supply and demand. ?The gold held in New York and London is/may be gone.? Fact or fiction? The Fed and London ain?t telling, or what they are telling is that ?belief? is untrue. Fiat currencies are being created at unprecedented levels. We all know that is a fact, and many believe gold and silver will/should recognize that fact and be priced accordingly, [but are not]. The fundamentals for silver supply and demand are incredibly bullish. Few can deny that, the few being the Fed and JPM, et al.

The market knows all of this! Yet, the price of both gold and silver are languishing in protracted trading ranges. So how valuable are the fundamentals or opinions about gold going to $5,000, or silver to $400, [pick your own number, as most undoubtedly have one]?

For right now, and for the pat 18 months or so, the best information in the world, the strongest opinions held have been ?useless.? The charts, [the market translated into a visual format], reflect the trading ranges, and current prices are just about dead center within them. The middle of a trading range is where the level of knowledge is at its lowest. It is a coin toss. Price can rally to the top of the range and still fail, or it can decline to the bottom of the range and fail to go lower. Flip a coin!

Whatever your opinion of where the price of gold and/or silver should be, this is what the market is saying about your ?belief/opinion:?

[Monthly charts are not included as the month ends next week, and those charts will be included next week. The discussion for gold is more general, and a little more detail is given in the silver charts, as both are similar.]

The market is showing price to be in the middle of a lengthy trading range, [TR], and until the TR is broken, up or down, one is spinning wheels in between. Last week, we showed how the clustering of closes could signify support and a rally, or a pause before continuing lower. The gold ?rally? fizzled and has retraced back to the clustering. Will it continue to act as support, or fail?

Not only is gold in the middle of the TR, it is also in the middle of a down channel. It is anyone?s guess for now.

Let us add that the fundamentals are incredibly bullish, and within that context, we continue to advocate buying the physical at any price, and buy consistently. Our analysis pertains to trading/buying the futures. Regardless of the bullish context of the fundamentals, the market is saying, ?Not right now.? Until price rallies above $1,800, it is not going reach whatever future expectation one may have, which is all we are saying. For timing, any/all fundamental considerations are useless. For positioning one?s self in the physical, now is the time. When gold/silver take off, [even we have a bias], it will be fast and furious [opinion], with no looking back, but that can be months, Quarters, possibly year[s] away.

gold weekly price chart 25 january 2013 gold silver price news

The daily chart comments pretty much speak for themselves.

Last week, we noted a long position on the strength of the wide range, strong close bar, 6th bar from the end. The recommendation did not lead to much profit, but profits were taken prior to the decline, based on developing market activity at the time.

gold daily price chart 25 january 2013 gold silver price news

While silver is weaker, relatively to gold, it is behaving relatively stronger of late. Note how the weekly close is higher/above the clustering of closes, where gold is right at the clustering location, [both still in the middle!].

As with gold, now is the time to continue accumulating [stacking, as it were] silver at any price. Sales of the American Eagle are going through the roof and were recently halted until 28 January. Why the government continues to sell them at all is beyond us in comprehension, given it is part of the forces [of evil] endeavoring to suppress the market?s alternative to the insidious issue of fiat.

silver weekly price chart 25 january 2013 gold silver price news

For as much as an argument can be made that price is holding reasonably well within the ongoing TR, the ?fact? that silver failed to reach the upper channel line is a sign of weakness. Yet, unlike gold, the decline in silver held above the wide range, strong close bar where a long position was recommended. You can see the small range high at 32.50, 3rd bar from the end. It was the market?s message telling us that demand was weak. The long position was liquidated profitably, before the decline set in. Love those messages!

Where will the decline stop? We have no clue, nor do we [or you] need to guess. Instead, simply wait for developing market activity to indicate demand is overcoming supply. Why guess when the best source of information will make some kind of factual declaration?!

Maybe price will hold potential support at the clustering of closes, maybe not. What is more important is that the existing TR is telling everyone to wait, for those inclined to heed the market?s message. Even on a shorter time frame, within the TR, the market is STILL saying, price is not strong. Buy the physical, but not the futures.

Fundamental context matters for what side one chooses. The message from the market matters the most for timing and implementing one?s belief. That is a fact that has never changed and one that never will. Count on it!

[Just don't take it to the bank. Banks cannot be trusted.]

Israel's comatose Sharon showing brain activity

(AP) ? A team of Israeli and U.S. scientists say new tests on comatose former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon show significant brain activity.

Ben-Gurion University on Sunday said Sharon responded to external stimuli at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.

He was shown pictures of his family and listened to recordings of his son's voice while undergoing a special brain imaging scan. The university said "significant brain activity was observed ... indicating appropriate processing of these stimulations."

However, Sharon remains in a deep coma.

Sharon, 84, led Israel from 2001 until suffering a stroke in 2006. Since then, he has been in a vegetative state, connected to a respirator.

Sharon was a storied military officer who fought in three wars before entering politics. He unilaterally withdrew Israeli troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005.

Caught On Tape: Puppy Kidnapped From Local Pet Adoption Center ...

WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA.com) ? Pet adoption agencies work to team pets with forever homes.

But the people who run a pet adoption agency in Woodland Hills were shocked Saturday by someone stealing one of their puppies ? a Yorkie who was thrown from a car about a week ago.

The alleged theft was caught on tape.

Brittney Hopper, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, spoke to Debbie Sutz, the woman who runs the adoption program.

Sutz says, ?For years a pet adoption has been going on here but this is the first time someone has stolen a dog.?

Surveillance video shows a woman inside a caged area taking off with one of the dogs while a male accomplice is on the lookout. Sutz says, ?You hear about a lot of horrible things that goes on in the world but a dog? To come in and steal a dog in a public place is just shocking.?

The theft happened when a volunteer went to use the restroom and Sutz went to get more dogs from her car.

Sutz and Whitney Ellis ? who owns an ice skating rink in Woodland Hills ?? have pet adoptions here once a week.

Ellis says, ?Yorkies are known to be an expensive dog so they?re more sought after.?

The couple came by earlier in the day, says Ellis. They returned around 5:30 p.m. and within minutes the dog was gone.

Pet adoptions here usually cost around $300 dollars ? or they ask for a donation. The money helps to rescue other dogs and pay vet bills.

Sutz and Ellis told Hopper all they?re asking for is the dog to be returned.

Fraser and Neave adviser says Thai tycoon's raised offer is "fair"

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Fraser and Neave Ltd's independent financial adviser JP Morgan said on Sunday Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi's new offer of S$9.55 ($7.74) per share for the Singapore property and drinks conglomerate is "fair".

Directors who hold F&N shares, including chairman Lee Hsien Yang, intend to accept Charoen's revised offer, the company said in a statement.

Charoen is now set to take over F&N in Southeast Asia's biggest-ever acquisition. He had declared his S$9.55-per-share offer, which values the Singapore company at around S$13.75 billion ($11.2 billion), as final.

Thailand's third-richest man raised his offer for F&N last week to S$9.55 a share, 7.5 percent higher than his previous offer of S$8.88, to fend off a rival bid by a group led by Singapore-listed property firm Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd .

The Overseas Union group decided not to raise its S$9.08-per-share offer, saying such a move was no longer attractive after recent measures taken by the Singapore government to cool the city-state's property market.

F&N shares have been trading at Charoen's offer price of S$9.55 since the Overseas Union group bowed out of the two-month battle with the Thai tycoon, indicating that the market does not expect a new bidder to emerge.

Charoen currently has a 45.32 percent stake in F&N, held through Thai Beverage PCL and TCC Assets Ltd. The company has property assets worth more than S$8 billion as well as soft drinks, dairy and publishing businesses.

Analysts say Charoen is likely to tap F&N's network in Singapore and Malaysia to distribute Chang Beer, brewed by Thai Beverage, as well as spirits, energy drinks and instant coffee. In Thailand, where he already has an edge, Charoen may in turn market F&N's brands.

Netflix?s House Of Cards Could Be The Best Show You Won?t See On TV

house of cardsNetflix original series House of Cards makes for really good TV, even if you'll never watch the show on any broadcast or cable network. That's because Netflix cut a reported $100 million check for exclusive rights to stream the program to its subscribers. If the first two episodes are any indication, that bet should pay off handsomely.

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients | Psych ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on January 26, 2013

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients New research has found that qigong, an ancient mind-body practice, has been found to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in women undergoing radiation for breast cancer.

The study examined qigong in patients receiving radiation therapy and included a follow-up period to assess its benefits over time, according to researchers.

?We were [...] particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment,? said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center?s Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science.

?It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles.?

For the study, Cohen and his colleagues recruited 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China.

About half of the women ? 49 ? were randomly assigned to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy. The remaining 47 women comprised a control group receiving standard care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong, which consisted of synchronizing one?s breath with various exercises, the researchers explained.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured, including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and overall quality of life.

According to the researchers, patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy, with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time, the study found.

The study also found that qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

?We examined women?s depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more,? he said.

?In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group.?

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden or expedite the recovery process, especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiation therapy. Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of the treatments, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

According to the researchers, the findings support other previously reported trials examining the benefits of qigong, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations.

They note that additional research is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of cancer.

The study was published in the journal Cancer.

W.Pa. colleges find new ways to bring classes to life | TribLIVE

Washington & Jefferson students travel to another dimension to learn philosophy. Robert Morris scholars use music to study mathematical concepts. Point Park students learn how to sell out venues.

Western Pennsylvania colleges are exploring ways to make learning engaging with classes beyond the scope of traditional education. The classes often fill up fastest and are the most popular with students, educators say.

?Why should colleges have these ivory towers between disciplines when there are so many shared ideas between them?? said Heather Pinson, Robert Morris University professor of communications and media arts.

Pinson teaches a class with math professor Monica VanDieren called Math, Music and Art in which students apply theories of each discipline to study four themes: symmetry, finite and infinity, improv, and searching for truth and self.

Pinson admits the concept is complex, but students appreciate the class, for which one of their required textbooks is a graphic novel ? a novel in which the story is told with artwork, typically comic book art.

?The idea of the classroom is changing,? said Joe Douglas, 21, a senior actuarial science major from Greenville, Mercer County. ?Ten years ago, it would be someone standing there telling you the information. Now, it?s much more interactive. All classes are transitioning to that.?

During a recent class, Pinson played piano and taught students the mathematics behind chords: Each note is separated by one half-step, totaling up to 12 for an entire scale. Each student was assigned a note and, while standing in a circle, they held a piece of string to make triangles depicting each chord.

This triangle could be rotated or flipped by applying recent mathematical discoveries to the treatment of the musical notes, Pinson said. Students can maneuver points of the triangle over the diameter of the circle to create a new chord.

?You have to be able to work with others and be innovative and be problem-solvers,? she said.

Andrew Rembert, a Washington & Jefferson philosophy professor, teaches The Twilight Zone, which requires students to watch episodes of the popular 1960s television show, then delve into its themes of time travel, what it means to be human, eternal life and fear of the unknown.

Many students take it as a way to fulfill one of three required humanities courses. No matter their majors, students flock to the class. Rembert has to set aside a few slots for freshmen so that upperclassmen can?t get first bid on all the spots.

?You think outside the box and learn more in-depth concepts,? said Turner Rintala, 18, a freshman from Philadelphia.

In a recent class, Rembert delivered a lesson on nuclear weapons and the fear of their use during the time of the Cold War and Cuban Missile Crisis. A viewing of a ?Twilight? episode titled ?Third From the Sun? followed.

?It?s about what constitutes a human being,? Rembert said. ?The series was very in tune with the kinds of issues that were on people?s minds.?

Fans of Johnny Depp and history alike flock to Molly Warsh?s Global History of Pirates class at the University of Pittsburgh. The class is so popular, it will be open to 80 students in the fall, double this semester.

?It?s been super fun,? said Warsh, a history professor. ?It?s an easy sell. They all grew up with ?Pirates of the Caribbean.? ?

Students learn about much more than Depp?s Capt. Jack Sparrow. They talk about the role pirates played in the building of empires, the later struggle of merchants and their allies to eradicate piracy and how the culture persists today.

?It?s always really fun when you hear the students say, ?Holy smokes! This still exists!?? Warsh said.

In an age of rising tuition, classes that cross disciplines help educators prepare students for careers that might not even exist yet, RMU?s VanDieren said.

?They have to be able to adapt and be creative,? she said.

The average in-state tuition and fees for a full-time undergraduate at a four-year public institution in Pennsylvania was $12,079 in 2011-12, up 6.6 percent from the year before.

At Point Park, students are analyzing the workings of ticketing systems used in the sports, arts and entertainment industries in a class simply called Ticketing. They?re learning from industry veterans Jason Varnish, box office manager of Consol Energy Center, and Anthony Dennis, director of sales at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

The class is the brainchild of several Point Park alumni, who told their former teachers how valuable such a class would be. Students go to Consol Energy Center and learn about its operation and are required to work a Playhouse event.

?You can only learn so much in the classroom,? Varnish said.

Chris Vella, 22, a senior sports, arts and entertainment management major from Oakland, said he thinks the class will give him a one-up when applying for a job.

?You get the relevant knowledge of working in the field,? he said. ?It?s something you can write on your resume.?

Researchers A-C-T On DNA Storage

60-Second Science

Using a technique with multiple accuracy checks, researchers have stored large amounts of digital information on tiny volumes of synthetic DNA. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Scientists have used synthetic DNA to store digital files?including a photo, Shakespeare's sonnets and an audio recording of Martin Luther King. The work is published in the journal Nature. [Nick Goldman et al, Towards practical, high-capacity, low-maintenance information storage in synthesized DNA]

Unlike many forms of information storage, DNA is extremely long-lasting and does not require constant electrical power. Plus, it's tiny?a small cup of DNA can store one hundred million hours of high-quality video.

But until now, this storage method has faced too many obstacles: DNA synthesis is expensive and only works for short strings, and the decoding process creates lots of errors.

To avoid these problems, British researchers broke a long string of information into many overlapping short sequences, each tagged with its position in the overall sequence. American collaborators then synthesized short pieces of DNA to match the strings, and shipped the material overseas. Finally, researchers reconstructed the digital files with complete accuracy.

DNA storage is still very expensive. But the scientists predict advancing technology will lower prices and make their method cost-effective within a decade.

Expand to Europe's Most Dynamic eCommerce Market!

Back in October we introduced wire transfers in Polish banks, which are crucial when running business in Poland. For many of you it had no significance as your business operates only in the UK, France, the Netherlands or Portugal, and you have no plans to try new markets. However, the latest Polish eCommerce report will no doubt make you reconsider your expansion plans ? let us present to you some of the most interesting and impressive facts about this market from recent years and the expected figures for the near future.

?

New but dynamic

Polish ecommerce is a?relatively new market. Earlier last year eCommerce Europe claimed that in 2012 it would increase by 25?30% from the previous year. At present, Polish e-market is worth 5.6 billion euros, which makes it Europe?s most dynamic market with a?33,5% increase from 2010 to 2011! No surprise then that 50% of Polish e-shops have existed for barely 2?years, and only 11% of them are 5?years or more?old.

What do Poles buy online?

  • clothes & shoes?(17%)
  • household goods?(15%)
  • sport & hobby?(11%)

The survey respondents say they shop on the internet because they like it, it?s cheaper, saves time and it gives easier access to high quality products. Shoppers? habits mean only good news for shops ? 93% of them made money in?2011!

What the future holds

It?s believed that European eCommerce worth will increase from 97 billion euros in 2011 to 172 billion euros in 2016, with the biggest e-shopping boom in Spain, Italy and, yes, Poland!

If this didn?t convince you to expand your e-business to Poland, consider this:

  • 67% of households and 96% business have access to the internet
  • 70% of internet users claim they have shopped online
  • People tend to check out products in traditional shops, but then buy them online
  • 69% of shoppers trust online reviews more than shop assistants

As you can see, Poland is an interesting e-market with its golden age still ahead of us. Why not try to offer your products and services in that part of Europe too? Drop us a?line at info@paylane.com to find out how you can do?it!

Tekken Tag tournament 2 Wii U review ? Mushrooms and beach ...

Fighting games are my fall-back of choice. When I?m not sure what to play, a few rounds of juggles (and jiggles) keep me busy or get my mind ready for something else. Over the years, however, I have become more accustomed to a fight stick than a controller, something that can take more of a beating. Sigh, I?m going to stop with the phallus humour now, promise!

Last year I shared my thoughts on Tekken Tag Tournament 2, with a roster of characters so stunningly large that still has me fumbling to find people on the selection screen.

TekkenTagTournament2_WiiUEdition_NintendoCostumes_0015

The Wii U edition contains all of the characters and stages from the Xbox and PS3 versions of the game, giving you all the pugilists and every place to beat your friend?s face in. Characters like Dr B, with his flailing fighting style and Miharu, Xiaoyu?s busty friend, sit alongside Slim Bob, Ancient Ogre, Kunimitsu, Forest Law P.Jack, Alex, Angel, Michelle Chang, Sebastian and Lee?s alter ego, Violet.

If you are a Nintendo fan, this is going to be a treat. Get your favourite chars dressed up as: Mario, Luigi, Link, Bowser, Zelda, Peach, Samus (Zero suit) and Captain Falcon! These outfits range from suiting the character (Anna as Zero Samus) to completely ludicrous (Paul with Mario?s hat teetering on the top of his tower of hair).

mushroom_battle_000_23430.nphd

Mushroom battle mode introduces power-ups, making several strategic sidesteps necessary. Collect mushrooms to get bigger and stronger than your opponent. Be careful for poison mushrooms though, they hurt and make you smaller. Grabbing a star makes you invincible and makes all your attacks unblockable for a short while, which can really turn the tables at the last moment. All of these stages feature upbeat versions of classic Mario songs.

Tekken Ball mode FINALLY makes its return, last seen in Tekken 3. Get ready to beat up your opponent by storing your attacks inside a friendly looking beach ball. No really, that is how it works. And while you play, your ears will be caressed by a song of food, falling in love and the BALL!

?All I really wanna do is hit the ball?
BALLLL BALLLLL BALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!?

You can thank me later for the awesome music.

The third mode is not so much a game as a way to toss your gold away. Choose a character and give them some of your money. If they are in a good mood and you give them enough, they will give you an item! If they aren?t, watch your money disappear for nothing. Now maybe I don?t play enough fighting games, but I have yet to reach the point where I have spare money in TTT2, so adding a mode with no guarantee of items, a silly one minute timer between transactions and what feels like a really badly done dating game is puzzling, and feels downright stupid.Tekken-Tag-Tournament-2-Wii-U-Splash-Image

The game looks great on the Wii U, and you can set it to play only on the gamepad, moving audio and video off your TV so that Brenda can watch Jersey Shore. While everything is fluid during the game, there is this odd lag on the load screens, which looks almost like rubber-banding. With no option to install the game onto your HDD without buying it from the eStore, there was no way to tell if the digital download version was perhaps better.

The Wii U gamepad offers you filthy cheat mode OF FILTHY CHEATING. While it is admittedly noob friendly, I dislike games and platforms that offer you shortcuts for your moves. A single tap on the gamepad screen will unleash anything from a complicated combo to a special throw. You can also hold in the L button and the face buttons turn into another set of moves and combos.

tekken_tag_tournament_2_peach_toad

Character customisation is still an oddly slow affair, but the more artistic among us may find using the stylus to create custom colourations of their characters to be a real treat. Hopefully we will see some impressive fan-made colourations in the future. Though be careful to avoid this situation: ?No, I had to rub my stylus there on that character, my loving, understanding wife! What do you mean why? Because it?s art! No please put that sword down. Help. HE~~~~?

Multiplayer is always a touchy subject for Nintendo. I couldn?t get anything to connect, even when I switched routers, obviously putting a bad taste in my mouth. What was interesting was instead of creating lobbies, you can search for games with your friends, or search for games with a certain passkey. This four digit number can then be used on forums, gaming websites or wherever to make for an easy way to connect to people whom you might know, but aren?t necessarily on your friends list.

tekken-tag-tournament-2-wii-u-mario-skin-1024x576

The new modes, while fun, leave much to be desired. Odd failings like no tournament for the mushroom battle mode, as well as only one stage (with the exact same song every round) in Tekken Ball make this feel like a rushed attempt to be ready for the Wii U?s launch. The new content is great to have and is something any Nintendo fan should experience, but I keep going back to TTT2 on another console, where it is installed and I have a fighting stick already. At which point I get frustrated because I?m missing characters and costumes? sigh, this is tough.

In the end, it really boils down to whether you have it on another platform already or not. Are you a Nintendo fanboy? Of course you are if you own a Wii U, silly question! Personally, I?m still worried I will break the gamepad by playing fighting games on it. Because who hasn?t thrown their controller in a fit after losing to an annoying boss?

Extinction rates not as bad as feared ... for now

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Concerns that many animals are becoming extinct, before scientists even have time to identify them, are greatly overstated, according Griffith University researcher, Professor Nigel Stork. Professor Stork has taken part in an international study, the findings of which have been detailed in "Can we name Earth's species before they go extinct?" published in the journal Science.

Deputy Head of the Griffith School of Environment, Professor Stork said a number of misconceptions have fueled these fears, and there is no evidence that extinction rates are as high as some have feared.

"Surprisingly, few species have gone extinct, to our knowledge. Of course, there will have been some species which have disappeared without being recorded, but not many we think," Professor Stork said.

Professor Stork said part of the problem is that there is an inflated sense of just how many animals exist and therefore how big the task to record them.

"Modern estimates of the number of eukaryotic species have ranged up to 100 million, but we have estimated that there are around 5 million species on the planet (plus or minus 3 million)."

And there are more scientists than ever working on the task. This contrary to a common belief that we are losing taxonomists, the scientists who identify species.

"While this is the case in the developed world where governments are reducing funding, in developing nations the number of taxonomists is actually on the rise.

"World-wide there are now two to three times as many taxonomist describing species as there were 20 years ago."

Even so, Professor Stork says the scale of the global taxonomic challenge is not to be underestimated.

"The task of identifying and naming all existing species of animals is still daunting, as there is much work to be done."

Other good news for the preservation of species is that conservation efforts in the past few years have done a good job in protecting some key areas of rich biodiversity.

But the reprieve may be short-lived.

"Climate change will dramatically change species survival rates, particularly when you factor in other drivers such as overhunting and habitat loss," Professor Stork said.

"At this stage we have no way of knowing by how much extinction rates may escalate.

"But once global warming exceeds the 2 degree barrier, we can expect to see the scale of loss many people already believe is happening. Higher temperature rises coupled with other environmental impacts will lead to mass extinctions"
