FILE - In this April 21, 2006 file photo, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II meets the public during a walkabout to celebrate her 80th birthday in Windsor, England. In the next four days, the normal ebb and flow of British life will give way to a series of street parties, flotillas, outdoor concerts and finally the appearance of an elderly great-grandmother on her balcony to wave to her subjects. The pageantry is very grand and very British. But at the heart of the Diamond Jubilee celebration is a nearly universal sense of appreciation for the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who is marking 60 years on the throne. LONDON (AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II is off to the races, at the start of a four-day weekend celebrating her 60 years on the throne.

Diamond Jubilee festivities officially begin Saturday with a 41-gun salute fired by the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery at Horse Guards Parade in central London.

The 86-year-old monarch then will attend the Epsom Derby, one of the year's biggest horse-racing meetings.

The queen took the throne in 1952 and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Despite cool, damp weather in much of the country, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to participate in celebrations.

The events will include street parties, Sunday's 1,000-boat flotilla down the River Thames and a Monday pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney.

I have submitted a character for the 16 year old slot. Please tell me if he is not up to your standards. :)

Protection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love.

May I reserve the last female character?

Side Note: Life As We Knew It (and the two subsequent novels) are amazing books, and I'm happy to have found and RP based off of the series.

Cancer Cases Could Soar to an Unbelievable Rate by 2030

doctor-lab

Christopher Furlong, Getty Images

A study published this week revealed a sobering statistic: if worldwide population growth continues at its current pace, the number of cancer cases could rise 75% in the next two decades.

In 2008, 12.7 million people were diagnosed with some form of cancer, but the International Agency for Research on Cancer predicts that by 2030, that number will jump to 22.2 million.

Dr. Freddie Bray and his colleagues found that any reductions in infection-related cancers like stomach, cervical or liver cancer ? most common in lower-income regions of the world ? are being offset by ?an increasing number of new cases that are more associated with reproductive, dietary and hormonal factors.?

Nathan Grey, national vice president for global health for the American Cancer Society, said while middle and low-income countries are often equipped to deal with diseases like HIV and tuberculosis, they don?t have the means to handle an increase in cancer diagnoses.

Middle-income regions are especially at-risk. They haven?t yet conquered infection-related cancers (those caused by bacteria and viruses), and now they?ll be dealing with a rising number of lung, breast and colorectal cancer cases that often stem from a more ?Westernized? lifestyle.

?Sustained prevention efforts are also needed to lower these projected increases. As cancer becomes more globally prevalent, initiatives like tobacco cessation and immunization are crucial in reducing the disease?s worldwide burden,? says Dr. Michael P. Link, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Where this Hollywood Favorite Takes Scrapbooking Classes ...

Thursday, May 31, 2012, by Yale Breslin

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems?those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

2012_05_ink.jpg
Image via Yelp

Raised in Australia, self-taught jewelry designer Samantha Wills began creating trinkets and gems for her friends and family and eventually expanded to the rest of the world. Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Drew Barrymore, Kate Hudson, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez have all been spotted rocking her creations.

Given that I have a true obsession with stationery, finding The Ink Pad has been like uncovering a hidden world that I can get lost in for hours. It's this really charming stamp and stationary store on Seventh Avenye between 12th and 13th. It is truly like a treasure hunt in there!
In an email age, I love the art of hand-making stationery, and The Ink Pad is the perfect place to find tools and inspiration. They offer classes on a variety of topics from mixed media to scrapbooking, but I prefer to just immerse myself in the store. Discovering new stationery trinkets can trigger an entire new project or jewelry collection for me. I also love to get stamps here and display them at home in glasses in my design studio. I love that it's an old art that is still around today, especially the way digital times are progressing so rapidly.

Breast cancer survivor offers encouragement to others | Health ...

MADISON, Wis. -

The South Central Wisconsin Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is set for Saturday in Madison, and ahead of the event, a breast cancer survivor said she is proof that a diagnosis doesn't have to be a death sentence.

At least once a month, career coach Bridget McCurtis is at the Dane County Regional Airport boarding a plane.

"I live a very vibrant happy life. I travel quite a bit I have a good life," McCurtis said.

She said slowing down isn't an option for her, not even for breast cancer.

"I had seven weeks of radiation treatment. Then I had a lumpectomy, in March of 2008. I was only 34 years old," McCurtis said.

With no family history of the disease, McCurtis said she credits her self exams and early detection with saving her life.

"There aren't very many people who look like me and there definitely aren't people who look like me who are saying and acknowledging, 'I had breast cancer.' So, I do think in that sense I am an ambassador. I have a story to tell, and I have a positive story to tell," McCurtis said.

The South Central Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is working to improve survival rates for black women.

"Four of our nine grants this year focus on outreach to the African-American community and two are large grants in Rock County," said Executive Director Michelle Heitzinger.

Heitzinger said education is key.

"For many years, they thought it was something that affected white women, and if a black woman got it, she died. So, we had to kind of overcome that and do some education to say that there is hope; there are women surviving after a diagnosis," Heitzinger said.

McCurtis said she's proud to be a survivor. Now 38, she's using her experience to encourage all women to keep a positive attitude.

"I decided this was not going to take me out," McCurtis said. "There's no way this was going to be all that she wrote."

One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

WISC-TV is a sponsor of the South Central Wisconsin Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and there is still time to sign up at www.komensouthcentralwi.org.

The race will be held Saturday at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
