Suite 601. ? 2012 Ralph Grizzle (1)

Welcome champagne in the Grand Suite. ? 2012 Ralph Grizzle

We were fortunate to be upgraded on Silver Whisper to the Grand Suite, room 601, forward on the starboard side. I can only describe the suite as palatial. I could have conducted an aerobics class in the living room, which as you can see in the photos, was not only exceptionally well-appointed but also large.

The larger-than-life living room. ? 2012 Ralph Grizzle

My favorite place to relax was on the chaise longue that you see in the middle of the room. My daughter and I enjoyed the large-screen television, where we watched a movie with popcorn on one night.

On another evening we dined on Indian food, which we requested from our Indian butler Guresh, at the large dining table, where we also enjoyed room-service breakfast each morning when we had tours (breakfast served as a wake-up call).

The living room also features a bar, and of course, champagne, wine, spirits, soft drinks, bottled water and soft drinks were all provided, and replenished, free of charge.

The Grand Suite?s Master Bedroom can be configured with twin beds or queen-sized bed. ? 2012 Ralph Grizzle

The bedroom was also large and followed the curve of the ship, with two windows looking forward. If it?s fresh air and a sea breeze you?re after, there?s a long balcony off the living room.

The bedroom featured a huge walk-in wardrobe, and suite guests receive free laundry and pressing, a great perk for a long voyage. Guests who are not in the larger suites have self-service laundries or can pay to have their laundry done. I appreciate the fact that Silversea returns laundry and pressing the same day if in before 9 a.m.

When we boarded, our butler Guresh acquainted us with the room and the services he could provide ? reservations at La Terrazza, The Grill or Le Champagne; shoe-shining; delivery of afternoon canap?s ? and a lot more. Guresh not only treated us well but also saved us time. We even hosted a couple of cocktail receptions in our room, and Guresh arranged it all for us, with food and drink.

On the first day, Guresh presented us with three types of European luxury bath amenities. We were free to choose one and switch during the week if we wished.

Double vanities in the bathrooms make for happy couples. ? 2012 Ralph Grizzle

Our suite featured two bathrooms ? a full and a half-bath. The full bath had both tub, with whirlpool, and shower, plus double vanities, toilet and bidet. In the bedroom was a make-up vanity.

I?ve stayed in all sorts of rooms on cruise ships, but Silver Whisper?s Grand Suite is the largest and grandest that I?ve experienced. This is a perfect space for those who can afford it, and for those doing the world cruise beginning in January, well, I can?t say that they will be on top of the world in the Grand Suite, but they will be on top of the sea in a palatial room traveling in Silversea style.?

US: Deaths of Osama bin Laden, other top figures put al-Qaida on ...

One year ago, U.S. Navy SEALs launched a nighttime raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and killed former al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

WASHINGTON -- Osama bin Laden's death sent al-Qaida into a decline that will be hard to reverse, the United States said on Tuesday in a report that found terrorist attacks last year fell to their lowest level since 2005.

Describing 2011 as a "landmark year," the United States said other top al-Qaida members killed last year included Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, reportedly the militant organization's No. 2 figure after bin Laden's death, and Anwar al-Awlaki, who led its lethal affiliate in Yemen.

"The loss of bin Laden and these other key operatives puts the network on a path of decline that will be difficult to reverse," the State Department said in its annual "Country Reports on Terrorism" document, which covers calendar year 2011.

The report attributed the killings, which included the May 2011 raid in which U.S. commandos shot bin Laden in Pakistan, to improved cooperation on counterterrorism. But it also said al-Qaida is adaptable and poses "an enduring and serious threat."

U.S. forces found and killed the al-Qaida leader in the affluent Pakistani town of Abbottabad, where he had been living in a large compound.

While saying there were no terrorist attacks in the United States last year, the report asserted that the U.S. government remains concerned about "threats to the homeland," citing the foiled 2009 Christmas Day attempt by the Nigerian "underwear bomber" who sought to blow up a Detroit-bound aircraft.

The report included a statistical annex prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center?(NCTC) that showed the overall number of terrorist attacks worldwide fell to 10,283 last year from 11,641 in 2010.

Panetta: Only a 'small handful' of top al-Qaida targets left

The number of worldwide fatalities fell to 12,533 last year from 13,193 the year before, according to the statistics, which NCTC issued in a report published on June 1.

That was the lowest level since 2005, when there were more than 11,000 attacks and more than 14,000 fatalities. The general decline in terrorism-related fatalities -- which peaked at more than 22,000 in 2007 -- reflects, in part, less violence in Iraq.

The report added:?

Sunni extremists accounted for the greatest number of terrorist attacks and fatalities for the third consecutive year. More than 5,700 incidents were attributed to Sunni extremists, accounting for nearly 56 percent of all attacks and about 70 percent of all fatalities ...?Secular, political, and anarchist groups were the next largest category of perpetrators, conducting 2,283 attacks with 1,926 fatalities, a drop of 5 percent and 9 percent, respectively, from 2010.

The State Department report said that as al-Qaida's "core has gotten weaker," affiliated groups have gained ground, citing al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as a particular threat and voicing concern about al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

Arshad Butt / AP

Osama bin Laden is dead following a military operation in Pakistan and the US has recovered his body, US President Barack Obama announced Sunday night.

It also reported an increase in terrorist attacks in Africa, due largely to Nigeria's Boko Haram militant group, as well as in the Western Hemisphere, which it attributed chiefly to FARC insurgents in Colombia.

Daniel Benjamin, the State Department's coordinator for counterterrorism, said last year was also significant for the "Arab Spring" of popular protests and what he described as its rebuff to al-Qaida's ideology.

"We saw millions of citizens throughout the Middle East advance peaceful public demands for change without any reference to al-Qaida's incendiary world view," he said, adding that upheavals also present risks.

"Revolutionary transformations have many bumps in the road," he added. "Inspiring as the moment may be, we are not blind to the attendant perils."

U.S. counterterror officials say that after years of drone strikes and other activities against the leaders of Al Qaida, the group is no longer able to pull off a major attack against U.S. interests, such as 9/11. NBC's Mike Viqueira reports.

The report cites Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism.

It added:?

Al-Qaida and its affiliates and adherents are far from the only terrorist threat the United States faces. Iran, the world?s leading state sponsor of terrorism, continues to undermine international efforts to promote peace and democracy and threatens stability, especially in the Middle East and South Asia. Its use of terrorism as an instrument of policy was exemplified by the involvement of elements of the Iranian regime in the plot to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador in Washington, a conspiracy that the international community strongly condemned through a UN General Assembly resolution in November.

It highlighted that Syria was "mired in significant civil unrest for most of 2011" but "continued its strong partnership" with Iran.

The report added:

Syria has laws on the books pertaining to counterterrorism and terrorist financing, but it largely used these legal instruments against opponents of the regime, including political protesters and other members of the growing oppositionist movement.

The State Department also highlighted other forms of violent extremism around the world -- including attacks by the?Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that killed at least 88 people; anarchists in Greece and Italy targeting government offices, foreign missions and symbols of the state; as well as dissident Republican groups in Northern Ireland.

The National Counterterrorism Center's annex also highlighted:

  • Attacks on government facilities decreased by about 43 percent from 2010, from 796 attacks to 453 attacks in 2011.
  • There was a sharp increase in the number of attacks directed at energy infrastructure, including fuel tankers, fuel pipelines and electrical networks, rising from 299 attacks in 2010 to 438 attacks in 2011.
  • The number of attacks directed at public places declined in each of the past five years, from a high of 4,121 attacks in 2007 to 2,186 attacks in 2011.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Chevy is the short term for Chevrolet brand of car owned by General Motors and is one of the best known brands of vehicles in the United States. The company manufactures and creates cars that range from compact automobile to medium-duty pickup trucks. Chevrolet cars are meant to be marketed to the middle class and are often made with patriotic elements in their promotions. All in all, the company creates and manufactures eighteen cars.

Chevrolet cars began and were first manufactured in 1911. The company was established by William Durrant and Louis Chevrolet. Chevrolet first aimed to create cars that were med-sized and the price of the vehicles is on the middle-of-the-road range. Then again, beginning on the post war era, the stylist named Harley Earl began to produce some classy, beautiful and innovative vehicles.

General Motors initiated and started innovative marketing concepts of branding along with customer loyalty. The customer stated at an entry level of the 'good old reliable Chevy (properly Chevrolet)'.

As they prospered and moved forward in life the aim was for them to move up through the product line.

From Chevrolet to Pontiac perhaps or an Oldsmobile , on later ( hopefully ) to the upper market segment product of Buick and hopefully in the end , Lord willing to the ultimate high end of General Motors ( and highly profitable ) luxury status car line of Cadillac. Customers and their families.GM upper management reasoned are exceptionally brand loyal when it comes to automobiles. First cars are transportation, need to be reliable and be counted on. Secondly the car in American culture came to become a badge of position and success in life. Unfortunately over the years GM management and much of the American automotive production and marketing departments forgot this very lesson.
The entry level vehicles were foreign Asian made econoboxes. Guess what these entry level new car buyers have as their preferences now - Lexus, Infiniti and other higher end brands and models of the cars that they started with.

Cars of Chevrolet are available on various sizes, colors and styles. The brand names of the cars made by Chevrolet include Impala, Nova, Monte Carlo, Corvette and Corvair. They also have trucks and utility vehicles such as S-10, Blazer and Silverado. A lot of information about each of the said vehicles can be searched and found on many auto and consumer websites. With just one click of the mouse, a customer is able to compare prices and car features. Also, with just one click, one can find the type of Chevrolet vehicle that can suit one's desire and transportation needs.

It is worth noting that from the year 1955 all the way to 2002, Chevrolet created the small block of two hundred and sixty five cubic inch V-8 that has become a part of almost all cars of Chevrolet at one certain point or another. This falls to the sense of tradition and quality that is inherent and innate in the cars manufactured by Chevrolet.

With regards to tradition, the target market of Chevrolet is middle-class families who reside in the heartland of the United States. The promotions and commercials done by Chevrolet tend to bear patriotic theme and inculcate the idea that the vehicles of the company are purely manufactured and made in United States of America.

In closing, Chevrolet is owned by General Motors and was established in 1911. The said company creates and manufactures a wide array of vehicles which primarily targets the middle class people as customers. The commercials of the car's brand possesses patriotic theme to instill to its consumers the spirit of patriotism. Its no secret that Chevrolet's corporate slogan became " Chevrolet - The Heartbeat of America".

EUROPA - Press Releases - Disaster resilience in the Horn of Africa ...

European Commission

Press release

Brussels, 31 July 2012

Disaster resilience in the Horn of Africa to be strengthened further with new aid injection from the European Commission

The European Commission is delivering on its promise to help the Horn of Africa recover from the destructive drought of 2011, overcome its chronic problems and set out on the path of development. Today the Commission is adding ?22 million to its humanitarian aid in the region. The new money will help build the resilience to future disasters of at least one million Kenyans and Somalis.

The new aid brings to ?313 million the European Commission's humanitarian aid contribution to the Horn of Africa since the start of the hunger emergency. In July last year the crisis was so grave that the United Nations declared famine in parts of Somalia. Today, thanks to better rains and the dedicated work of humanitarian organisations, the famine has abated. Yet hunger, displacement and insecurity persist.

"Millions of people in the region are still depending on humanitarian aid to survive, but after a good rainy season that promises a reasonable harvest, the challenge is shifting from saving lives in an emergency to preventing emergencies in the future," said Kristalina Georgieva, the European Union's Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response. "We can't prevent drought but we can prevent a repeat of the food crisis it caused here last year. Our new aid decision contributes to this goal," the Commissioner underlined.

To promote long-term solutions to the Horn of Africa's chronic problems (drought risks, insecurity, weak communal ability to withstand shocks, precarious livelihoods) the new funding will target local communities and those displaced by conflict and hunger and will provide them with food assistance, water and sanitation, livelihood support and health services.

The funds will be channelled through the EU's SHARE strategy (Supporting Horn of Africa Resilience). Launched this year, SHARE has become one of the main vehicles for EU assistance to the Horn of Africa. With it, the Commission pools its humanitarian assets (saving lives in the crisis) and its long-term development capabilities and directs them at removing the root causes of food crises with the goal to prevent their reoccurrence.

SHARE is financing a variety of projects: from the treatment of severe malnutrition in infants to improved management of natural resources, livestock health and trade, agriculture (improved and adapted practices, small-scale irrigation), alternative income generating activities and basic services (water, sanitation).

Background

Last year, severe drought in the countries of the Horn of Africa ? Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia ? caused one of the most dramatic humanitarian crises of this century. The entire region faced its worst drought in 60 years. More than 13 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance. And for the first time since 1992, the United Nations declared famine because of the lack of access to food in parts of southern Somalia.

As one of the world?s leading donors to this food crisis, the European Union (Commission and Member States combined) has provided ?791 million to the region since the crisis began last year. The European Commission alone has assisted 6.5 million vulnerable people last year by providing food, nutrition, water and sanitation worth ?181 million.

So far in 2012 the Commission had allocated ?132 million in humanitarian assistance to the Horn of Africa. This assistance is helping people to purchase and transport food, as well as providing of medical care, as well as of water and sanitation. Contributing to the survival of millions of people, it is also supporting the first steps in the recovery process, for instance through the provision of seeds and tools, improved water management, and restocking of herds.

The funds are being implemented on the ground by over a dozen of the Commission's partner agencies, including both UN agencies and international NGOs.

The European Union's active presence as a development actor in the Horn of Africa also emphasizes on food security, agriculture and rural development. Since 2008, the EU has committed over ?400 million in development aid to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia; helping to feed the most vulnerable, improve nutrition and support sustainable agriculture.

Amazon adds 'scan and match' feature to Cloud Player

12 hrs.

On Tuesday, the folks at Amazon announced a feature that's been added to Cloud Player: Scan and match.

This new feature enables something very similar to Apple's iTunes Match on Amazon's?cloud-based music streaming?service.?You allow Amazon to scan your iTunes or Windows Media Player libraries in order to match songs you own to those in Amazon's catalog. All of the matched songs ??whether they were purchased from iTunes, ripped from CDs, or otherwise acquired ??become instantly available in Cloud Player.

As with iTunes Match, the songs that you'll find in Cloud Player will be 256 Kbps, no matter how low-quality your own versions were (though Amazon hasn't yet confirmed which file format it's using to deliver the streamed audio).?You can access Cloud Player?? and stream?these matched songs?? from a Kindle Fire, Android device, iPhone, iPod Touch or any Web browser.?In a side bit of good news, both Sonos and Roku players will soon get Amazon Cloud Player access, too.

Since the scan and match feature is simply an addition to Cloud Player, it won't cost you anything?? assuming you have a small music library. You see, there's a free version of Cloud Player that lets you store all of the MP3s you've ever purchased on Amazon, along with up to 250 songs imported (or matched)?from your own collection. If you need to store more of your own tunes than that, then you'll have to shell out $25 per year, which will grant you the ability to import up to 250,000 songs.

It's worth noting that you are able to download your songs anywhere, without DRM, in the format they were originally imported.

I'm going to give Cloud Player's new scan and match feature a try.?Here's hoping that Amazon got things right.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
