Marvel Testing Actors for Guardians of the Galaxy

With the movie scheduled to come out on August 1, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy is starting to cast up. First up is the role of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, a half-human-half-alien space policeman who leads a rag-tagged group of super-powered beings against threats to the galaxy.

According to Deadline, Marvel has a shortlist of actors who the studio wants to test out for the role. Confirmed on the list are Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne. The site also heard there may be interest from/in Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, and Sullivan Stapleton among others.

In the comics, there are over ten members belonging to the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Marvel may want to limit that number in the movie adaptation. If the concept art released by studio is any indication, the movie may focus on just five of the members: Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot.

If you've wondered which movie Thanos, the character seen in the ending credits of The Avengers, will show up, Guardians of the Galaxy seems to be the likely one.

James Gunn wrote the latest draft of the screenplay and is attached to direct the movie for Disney/Marvel.

Growing numbers of bedbug outbreaks are prompting more people to use insecticides, sometimes with dire results.

People creeped-out by rising rates of bed bug infestations may be taking eradication too far, according to federal health officials alarmed by growing reports of pesticide misuse -- and poisonings.

Between 2006 and 2010, there were 129 reports of people who suffered mild to serious health harms when outdoor pesticides were used indoors, according to a health advisory issued this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. One woman died.

?Many people are somewhat desperate to find any solution,? said Bernadette Burden, a CDC spokeswoman. ?This is something they?re not used to. Oftentimes, they?re tempted to use any insecticide that they can get their hands on.?

That was certainly true for Melissa Constantinou, 25, a personal chef in Lowell, Mass., who was plagued with bedbugs last year. Her apartment was treated four times and she says the potential for health problems never entered her mind.

?Oh my gosh, it?s so emotionally disturbing,? she said. ?I was willing to do whatever it took. I didn?t think about the long-term effects at all.?

The problem is ?an emerging national concern,? the health agencies said, citing data from the National Pesticide Information Center, where inquiries about bedbugs nearly doubled between 2007 and 2011. Nationwide, reports of bedbug infestations have been rising for years, the CDC says. Between January 2008 and April 2012, first-time service calls for bed bug treatment tripled, from about 100 to 300 requests a month, according to a survey conducted by Jeff White, technical director of the website BedBug Central.

Most of the problems arise when people use too much pesticide or apply it improperly, said David Stone, director of the NPIC, who monitors the data.

?A lot of them don?t understand that the label is the law,? said Stone. ?This product should not be applied directly to the skin. That product should not be used on mattresses.?

Victims suffered typical symptoms of pesticide poisoning, including headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and muscle tremors.?

In Ohio, in 2010, a family that included two parents, four young children and a roommate all became ill after an uncertified pesticide company used malathion to spray an apartment five times over three days. The pesticide malathion was not registered for indoor use and the crew applied it so liberally that the beds and floor coverings were saturated, according to a recent CDC account.

The death occurred when a 65-year-old North Carolina woman with heart and kidney problems became ill after liberal pesticide use. She and her husband sprayed all the walls and baseboards in the house with one kind of insecticide, used a different insecticide on the mattress and box springs, and opened nine cans of insecticide fogger. Two days later, they reapplied insecticides to the mattresses and box springs and opened another nine cans of a different fogger. The woman applied a flea and bedbug pesticide to her arms, sores on her chest and her hair before covering it with a plastic cap.

Two days after the second application of the pesticides, the woman?s husband found her unresponsive. She was hospitalized for nine days before her death, the CDC report said.

?Outdoor pesticides should not be used indoors under any circumstances,? ATSDR officials warn. Consumers must make sure to read the product labels carefully to make sure they?re registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and that they?re certified for indoor use.

?More importantly, follow the guidance and make sure you?re using the right pesticide and that you?re treating the right pest,? said the CDC?s Burden, who noted that bedbugs often can resemble other critters at different stages in their life cycle.

No Earth-Shattering Mars Discovery by Curiosity Rover Yet: NASA

Contrary to rampant speculation, NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has not made an earth-shaking find just a few months into its Red Planet mission, agency officials said today (Nov. 29).

Rumors of a big discovery began swirling earlier this month, after an NPR story quoted Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger as saying that the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument had recently gathered data "for the history books."

SAM is capable of identifying organic compounds, the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it. So many people assumed that Curiosity had detected organic compounds in the Martian soil.

But that's not the case, officials said.

"Rumors and speculation that there are major new findings from the mission at this early stage are incorrect," officials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., which manages Curiosity's mission, wrote in a mission update today. "At this point in the mission, the instruments on the rover have not detected any definitive evidence of Martian organics."

Grotzinger, who is a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena, and several other members of the Curiosity team will hold a press conference Monday (Dec. 3) at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Don't expect a bombshell announcement.

"The news conference will be an update about first use of the rover's full array of analytical instruments to investigate a drift of sandy soil," JPL officials wrote.

The $2.5 billion Mars rover Curiosity?landed inside Mars' huge Gale Crater on Aug. 5, kicking off a planned two-year mission to determine if the Red Planet could ever have supported microbial life. SAM is just one of 10 science instruments Curiosity carries to help it in its quest, along with an array of 17 cameras.?

Curiosity scientists are currently scouting out potential targets for the first use of its drill, which can bore 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) into solid rock. The rover has already analyzed scooped-up soil samples with SAM and another instrument on its body known as CheMin.

While no huge news is apparently in the offing on Monday, NASA has high hopes for Curiosity and its mission.

"The mission already has found an ancient riverbed on the Red Planet, and there is every expectation for remarkable discoveries still to come," JPL officials wrote.

Gabriella Agostinelli is back, this time to dispense some much-needed advice for cottage food?entrepreneurs; make us something delicious, but cover your assets. Cottage food production is not as simple as getting a permit and turning the oven on.

Small-scale food entrepreneurs have recently celebrated the passing of long-awaited ?cottage food laws? in?several?U.S. states. Formerly, foodies with a recipe and dream were required to either process their goods in a commercial kitchen at high cost, or establish a normal bricks-and-mortar enterprise of their own. Today, cottage food laws allow home cooks/bakers to process ?non-potentially hazardous??food products in their own kitchens, to be later sold directly to the public. Cottage foods typically include nonperishable shelf items (think: baked goods, preserves,?nut mixes, etc.).

Aspiring ?cottage? food processors need only complete a few steps?to receive a government stamp of approval. Depending on one?s state of residence, interested parties may only need to participate in a food safety course, attain a local zoning permit, comply with labeling requirements, and agree to have their kitchen inspected in the case of a complaint.

Considering the incredibly low entrance costs associated with this business model, it is obvious why cottage laws are attractive. In these tough economic times, it seems a lot safer for budding food entrepreneurs to test the waters by selling goods processed from home rather than to open shop elsewhere at great expense and even greater risk of failure.

A bit of skepticism, however, is a healthy thing to consider for anyone making food under cottage food laws. Food product liability is as much of a concern for the cottage food entrepreneur as it is for giant producers like General Mills of Tyson Chicken. In an article for the Orlando Weekly, Bob Jones, an owner of a commercial kitchen well-versed in food-safety standards, Voices a typical critique. He equates running a cottage business with playing a game of ?Russian Roulette,? warning, ?eventually, you?re going to lose.? These risks are largely generated by a lack a ?controlled environment? in home kitchens, unlike in his business, which must employ stringent food-safety standards and is subjected to great state oversight (certification/licensure, inspections, etc.).

Mr. Jones makes some very good points. Simply because a law allows you to do business in a certain way does not mean it will exempt you from responsibility if things go awry. Business Law 101: if you run a sole proprietorship, you?are the business. If the business? food made a person sick,?you?must pay for hospital bills. Because standard homeowners?/renters? insurance policies usually do not cover home business operations, I highly recommend purchasing liability insurance?to protect your personal assets. (Colorado is the only state whose law mentions liability insurance, but merely encourages cottage food businesses to purchase it ? C.R.S.A. ? 25-4-1614). If?you are thinking about starting a cottage food operation, consider establishing an LLC or another business entity to minimize your liability. It is also imperative to buy some liability insurance before you sell your product, and factor the cost of the insurance into your business plan. After all, we want those foodie dreams to live on.

Fisker Karma production has been halted for a month, A123 Systems' bankruptcy to blame

Fisker Automotive is certainly no stranger to hold ups, and it turns out they've had another: production of the firm's Karma hybrid has been halted since its sole battery supplier, A123 Systems, filed for bankruptcy in October. Since A123 slowed its battery output after the filing, the automaker has been too short on batteries to continue churning out vehicles. Fisker anticipates resuming production after the ill-fated outfit is auctioned off, but it doesn't expect to know the outcome of the sale until mid-December. If your Karma's lithium-ion pack goes kaput in the meantime, there's still hope. As of now, the company says it has enough batteries in stock for customers who need replacements.

DAVID PETRAEUS ISSUES MEA CULPA: I SCREWED UP 'ROYALLY': ABC's Martha Raddatz reported on "Good Morning America," today that for the first time since he resigned as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, we're hearing from Gen. David Petraeus. Petraeus wrote in a letter to one of his mentors, retired Brigadier General James Shelton, "I screwed up royally, and I paid the price, appropriately." Shelton has been friends with Petreaus for three decades, and he reached out to the former CIA chief when he resigned. Last week, Shelton says, Petraeus wrote him back. In the letter Petraeus writes that his wife Holly is "once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her." Shelton tells ABC News that while he was disappointed, he thinks Petraeus made a onetime mistake. Neither Paula Broadwell nor Petraeus had any comment to ABC News. http://abcn.ws/TnHN9X

AMERICANS VOICE CONCERN OVER 'FISCAL CLIFF' NEGOTIATIONS. ABC's Jake Tapper reported on "World News" last night on calls from Americans to Washington to get to work, and get the job done on the fiscal cliff negotiations. With 34 days left to make a deal, the President continued his public relations push on Wednesday, surrounding himself with supporters who wrote to the White House saying they do not want to see a tax increase on the middle class. It's all part of a move to ratchet up pressure on Republicans to reach a deal before the country goes over the cliff on Dec. 31. THE NOTE:

The private meeting today at the White House between President Obama and Mitt Romney is shaping up to be one of the all-time great fly-on-the-wall moments between a president and his defeated rival.

The White House has not released an agenda for the sit-down, and as ABC's Mary Bruce reports, Press Secretary Jay Carney said Obama does not have a "specific ask" or assignment for Romney.

"During his news conference two weeks ago, the president said that there are aspects of Governor Romney's record and Governor Romney's ideas that he believes could be very helpful," Carney told reporters yesterday. "The president noted that Governor Romney did a terrific job running the Olympics and that skill set lends itself to ideas that could make the federal government work better, which is a passion of the president's."

Carney noted that there is a "symbolic element" to the meeting: "We consistently have elections and either pass power on to a new leader of a new party or because the voters chose - continued to invest power and authority and the office in the same party or the same individual without violence."

Meanwhile, representatives from the Obama and Romney campaigns as well as top advisers to many of the GOP primary candidates and several influential outside groups are gathering today at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government for a 2012 debrief.

On neutral ground in Cambridge, Mass. fierce rivals (think Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades and Obama campaign manager Jim Messina) will meet for the first time since the election - and many for the first time ever.

The sessions at Harvard University's Institute of Politics will include a who's who of political bold-faced names from campaign 2012, including senior campaign aides like Romney political director Rich Beeson and pollster Neil Newhouse, Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter and digital director Teddy Goff, Rick Santorum adviser John Brabender, former Rick Perry campaign manager Rob Johnson and even Mark Block, who ran Herman Cain's short-lived but much-talked-about presidential bid. http://abcn.ws/TtXsbk

ABC's RICK KLEIN: If President Obama and Mitt Romney were both serious - if the former wants his onetime rival's input, and the latter truly wants to be part of the national conversation - there may be no better time to put those promises into action. Negotiations over the fiscal cliff will determine the future not just of the Washington politics but of the nation, and the business community is more than a little bit interested. Enter Romney, maybe, at a moment where he still has some leverage inside the GOP, and can use the credibility he's earned in the business world to help stave off economic calamity. It doesn't have to be a plot twist that would have been rejected by producers of "The West Wing" to provide a task of substance for Romney to fill, and fast.

FLASHBACK - OBAMA ON HOW ROMNEY 'COULD BE VERY HELPFUL.' At his post-election press conference on Nov. 14, President Obama said he was looking forward to a meeting with Mitt Romney: "You know, there - there are certain aspects of Governor Romney's record and his ideas that I think could be very helpful. And well, to give you one example, I do think he did a terrific job running the Olympics. And you know, that skill set of trying to figure out how do we make something work better applies to the federal government. There are a lot of ideas that I don't think are partisan ideas but are just smart ideas about how can we make the federal government more customer-friendly? How can we make sure that, you know, we're consolidating programs that are duplicative? You know, how can we eliminate additional waste? He - he presented some ideas during the course of the campaign that I actually agree with. And so it'd be interesting to talk to him about something like that. There may be ideas that he has with respect to jobs and growth that can help middle-class families that I want to hear. So you know, I'm not - I'm not either prejudging what he's interested in doing, nor am I suggesting I've got some specific assignment. But I - what I want to do is to - is to get ideas from him and see if - see if there are some ways that we can potentially work together."

ROMNEY AIDE RE-LIVES THE ELECTION. Romney strategist Stuart Stevens, the eccentric advertising and message guru who was frequently at Romney's side on the campaign trail, looked back on the race in a Washington Post Op-Ed in which he acknowledged that "Romney was never a favorite of D.C.'s Green Room crowd or, frankly, of many politicians." But his column amounts to a fierce defense of Romney the candidate, even arguing that the former Massachusetts governor sparked a "national movement." "When Mitt Romney stood on stage with Barack Obama, it wasn't about television ads or whiz- bang turnout technologies, it was about fundamental Republican ideas versus fundamental Democratic ideas," Stevens wrote. Government watchdogs today questioned the place of top Obama campaign donors among the elite few invited to the White House over the past two weeks for private presidential consultations on the looming "fiscal cliff." ABC's Devin Dwyer reports, supporters of President Obama who maxed out personal contributions to his campaign or the Democratic National Committee, or helped bundle hundreds of thousands of dollars more, have been seated at the table in every publicly-announced post-election White House meeting with "business leaders," according to lists released by the administration. Among the executives Obama met with on Wednesday were several who gave to the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. -DEMOCRATS WIN (ALMOST) THE LAST OUTSTANDING HOUSE RACE. Nearly two months after Election Day, all congressional races are finally over - almost. A runoff in Louisiana will keep a GOP-held seat in GOP hands, but Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre has finally won in North Carolina's 7th Congressional District, after a recount. McIntyre maintained a slim lead since Election Day as more ballots were counted, and after counties finished recounting on Wednesday, McIntyre held a lead of 654 votes and Republican David Rouzer conceded the race, the Associated Press's Gary D. -FINAL HOUSE COUNT: DEMS GAIN 8 SEATS. The 113th Congress will consist of 201 Democrats and 234 Republicans. ABC's Chris Good reports, Democrats actually gained more seats compared to the pre-election House makeup, but due to vacancies in a handful of Democrat-held seats-they entered the 2012 elections holding 190 House seats-but due to vacancies in three Democrat-held districts, the party is counting its gains at eight seats. And thanks to a quirky election in Michigan's 11th district, Democrats will enjoy an extra seat until the end of the year, as voters chose Democrat Dave Curson to replace former GOP congressman Thaddeus McCotter until the next Congress, when Republican Kerry Bentivolio will take over.

- LAST RACE STANDING; LOUISIANA'S RUNOFF. And then there was one. The final race of the 2012 elections won't affect the partisan makeup of the House next year, since it will remain in Republican hands, but Louisiana's 3rd Congressional District is the only one that hasn't yet chosen a representative in the 113th Congress. Coincidentally, a member-on-member battle will cap off the sometimes-wacky redistricting year that saw a handful of sitting members forced to run against each other, usually in primaries. Republican Reps. Jeff Landry and Charles Boustany will face off Dec. 8 in a runoff for the seat. Boustany would seem to hold the edge, having topped Landry 45 percent to 30 percent in the multi-way Nov. 6 election, with Democrat Ron Richard collecting 22 percent.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS HAVE ARRIVED AT 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE. It took 54 live Christmas trees, 175 pounds of gingerbread and 85 volunteers from across the country to pull it off, but the holidays have finally arrived at the White House reports ABC's Mary Bruce. Rebels Star Wins Coveted Award As Magnolia State?s Best College Football Player Over Four Other Finalists in Voting By Panel of Sports News Media Representatives

JACKSON, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace, fresh off of leading his Rebels team to its first Egg Bowl victory in four years over in-state arch rival Mississippi State, won the C Spire Conerly Trophy on Tuesday night as the Magnolia state?s top college football player in 2012.

Wallace, who led the Rebels to a 6-6 record this year and its first bowl berth since 2009, passed for 2,843 yards with 19 touchdowns, ran for another 363 yards and eight touchdowns and scored a touchdown on a 25-yard pass reception while logging a cumulative 144.20 quarterback rating this year, one of the best in the SEC and among the top 40 in the nation.

Wallace received the trophy during a special awards program Tuesday night in Jackson at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum from master of ceremonies Rick Cleveland, MSHOF executive director, and Jim Richmond, vice president of Corporate Communications for C Spire Wireless, title sponsor of the award since 1998.

He edged out four other finalists ? Mississippi State defensive back Johnthan Banks, Southern Miss defensive lineman Jamie Collins, Jackson State wide receiver Rico Richardson and Delta State offensive tackle Kendall Hunter. A panel of 50 print, television and radio news media members across the state selected the finalists and the winner from among 10 nominees from each of Mississippi?s football-playing four year colleges.

Wallace, a sophomore from Pulaski, Tennessee, joins four other Ole Miss Rebels as former winners of the coveted award ? quarterbacks Stewart Patridge (1997) and Eli Manning (2001 and 2003), running back Deuce McAllister (1999) and linebacker Patrick Willis (2006).

Wallace started every game for the Ole Miss Rebels this year and his 3,206 total offensive yards make him only the second player in school history to eclipse 3,000 yards in a season behind Eli Manning, who reached that total twice during his Ole Miss career. He praised Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze, the coaching staff and his teammates for helping him lead the school back to respectability in the SEC.

Senate gives green light to Pentagon green energy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate on Wednesday gave the green light to the Pentagon's investment in green energy.

By a vote of 62-37 on Wednesday, the Senate backed an amendment that would delete a provision in the defense bill prohibiting the military from spending money on alternative fuels if the cost exceeded traditional fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil. The Pentagon has opposed the provision that a sharply divided Senate Armed Services Committee added in May.

The Navy and Air Force have pushed to use more biofuels to operate its aircraft and ships, with military leaders suggesting a greater reliance on alternative sources in the next decade to ease dependence on foreign oil.

"It should tell us something that in an era of reduced Defense Department budgets, our senior leaders remain fully committed to this effort. We should support them in these commonsense approaches," said Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., sponsor of the amendment.

The strong bipartisan vote reflected the growing business of alternative fuels in states such as Iowa and Kansas as well as the Dakotas as 11 Republicans joined 49 Democrats in backing the measure. Two Democrats from coal-producing states ? Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jim Webb of Virginia ? voted against the amendment.

The Senate finally began work Wednesday on the far-reaching, $631 billion defense policy bill for next year ? six months after the Armed Services Committee acted on the legislation and the House passed its version. The bill authorizes money for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel.

The total is $4 billion less than the House-passed bill, and House-Senate negotiators will have to work out the difference in the closing days of the year.

During the debate, Udall pointed out that the Defense Department consumes approximately 330,000 barrels of oil a day and this year, the military has already spent $15 billion on fuel. Based on increased oil prices, the amount is $2.5 billion more than the department had planned and another month remains.

To deal with the rising costs and reliance on foreign oil, the department is exploring alternative fuels.

The Pentagon is pushing for $1.4 billion in next year's budget for investments in clean energy, including hybrid electric drives for ships, more efficient engines, better generators and solar power.

"As one of the largest landowners and energy consumers in the world, our drive is to be more efficient and environmentally sustainable," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a speech in May to the Environmental Defense Fund. "We have to be able to have the potential to transform the nation's approach to the challenges we are facing in the environment and energy security. We've got to look ahead to try to see how we can best achieve that."

Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma have pushed to limit Pentagon investments in clean energy, arguing that in a time of defense budget cuts the Pentagon can't afford spending money on green energy projects.

Inhofe has gone further, saying earlier this year that Panetta has a "real war to win, and he should not be wasting time perpetrating President Obama's global warming fantasies or his ongoing war on affordable energy."

The Senate bill extends, for one year, the divisive provisions on the handling of suspected terrorists that snagged the legislation last year. The legislation would deny terror suspects, including U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subject them to indefinite detention. It also would require military custody for foreign terrorist suspects linked to al-Qaida or its affiliates and involved in plotting against or attacking the United States.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., with the support of conservative Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, introduced an amendment to the bill that stipulates the government cannot detain a U.S. citizen or legal resident indefinitely without charge or trial even in with the authorization to use military force or declaration of war.

"If we give up our rights, have we not let the terrorists win?" Paul said in arguing for the amendment, which may be voted on later this week.

NASA's TRMM satellite confirms 2010 landslides

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A NASA study using TRMM satellite data revealed that the year 2010 was a particularly bad year for landslides around the world.

A recent NASA study published in the October issue of the Journal of Hydrometeorology compared satellite rain data from NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) to landslides in central eastern China, Central America and the Himalayan Arc, three regions with diverse climates and topography where rainfall-triggered landslides are frequent and destructive hazards to the local populations.

The work, led by Dalia Kirschbaum, a research physical scientist in the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is part of an ongoing effort to catalog worldwide rainfall-triggered landslides -- one of the world's lesser known but often catastrophic natural hazards. Locating them is a step in an effort to be able, one day, to predict and warn.

Currently, Kirschbaum explains, no consistent regional or global scale warning system exists for landslide disasters. To create one, scientists need to understand more than the individual factors that may contribute to local landslides -- the intensity and total amount of rainfall over hours to days, slope angle, soil type and saturation, among others.

"For other hazards like hurricanes, there's a clearly defined season," says Kirschbaum. "From satellite data and observations we know that hurricane season in the Atlantic spans from June 1 to Nov. 30. But we don't have that type of record for landslides around the world, and we want to know when and where to expect them in different regions."

Scientists also need a systematic way to assess landslide hazards for a region, and one way to do that, says Kirschbaum, is to look at the distribution and intensity of rain from satellite data and see how that correlates with where and how often landslides are being reported.

Creating Science by the Slice (of News)

The first step to developing landslide hazard assessments is to improve record keeping, Kirschbaum says. For the past several years, she has been developing the first global database for landslides triggered by rain, called the Global Landslide Catalog (GLC). Landslides are often too small to pick out of satellite imagery, so news stories are currently the best sources of information.

Daily, she and other research assistants examined media reports for possible landslides and dug out details such as where the landslide occurred, whether the landslide was triggered by a rain shower or a tropical cyclone, if there were fatalities, and if the type of landslide was characterized as a mudslide or a debris flow, among other characteristics. The GLC now has six complete years of data -- 2003, and 2007 through 2011 -- with new entries continually added. It contains more than 4,000 events that describe 20,600 reported fatalities among 60 different countries for 2007 through 2011.

However, Kirschbaum notes, landslide events are not uniformly reported around the world, with some not making the news unless they cause deaths or property damage. After compiling the 2010 record, Kirschbaum noted that 2010 appeared to be a particularly devastating year for landslides in parts of China, Central America and the Himalayan Arc. Kirschbaum compared the GLC with satellite-based rainfall information from TRMM and other satellites to see if the higher numbers of landslide reports corresponded with a higher amount of rainfall for those areas.

Fact-Checking the Stories with Impartial Witnesses

The TRMM Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) data includes rain data from 50 degrees north latitude to 50 degrees south latitude -- from southern Canada to the tip of South America--providing three-hourly and daily coverage of precipitation. Kirschbaum and her team relied on TMPA's 14-year record to provide a picture of global rainfall that could be related to landslides that occurred.

The big advantage of TMPA data, compared to ground data such as that from rain gauges, is that it measures rainfall in the same, consistent way over large regions. This provides a broader perspective that helps researchers like Kirschbaum and eventually forecasters equipped with satellite rainfall data to detect the kinds of rainfall signatures that are likely to produce destructive landslides.

Stating that extreme or prolonged rainfall can lead to landslides is not anything new, Kirschbaum says, but what is novel is that by examining the Global Landslide Catalog and TMPA precipitation record together, she can look at how reported landslide events compare with rainfall amounts. This in turn helps her find areas where landslides may be occurring but are not being reported.

Revealing the Long, Data-Drawn Truth

2010 was indeed an extraordinary year for landslides, says Kirschbaum, with three times as many reported events and twice as many reported fatal events as previous years within the Global Landslide Catalog.

Zhouqu County, China, was hit by the deadliest landslides in decades, according to state media, which buried some areas under as much as 23 feet (7 meters) of suffocating sludge. 1,765 people died. Property damages totaled an estimated $759 million. The TMPA rain data showed that the region's susceptible, steeply sloped geography was pummeled by extreme rainfall from a local cloudburst.

"This is really the first time that you can see how rainfall varies with respect to rainfall-triggered landslides because no other database has this type of globally consistent view," says Kirschbaum.

While most of the intense rainfall that triggers landslides is local in scale, global atmospheric circulation patterns can often affect these local conditions. As Kirschbaum explains: "What I think is unique about 2010 is there is a really strong El Ni?o going into a really strong La Ni?a, which consequently impacted rainfall patterns around the world."

Eventually, as the database of both landslides and rainfall data grows, Kirschbaum will be able to see more defined patterns in landslide occurrence month-by-month, and if those patterns are changing.

"I think in some ways we can compare the situation with landslides with that of earthquakes 50 years ago," says David Petley, professor and co-director of the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience at Durham University's Department of Geography. "Our understanding of earthquakes improved dramatically when a global seismic array was deployed that allowed us to map earthquakes in space and time, providing insight into plate tectonics and thus earthquake mechanisms. We have not been able to map landslides in the same way, which means that we lack that time and space understanding. Dalia's work is important because she is collating this data, which is providing new insights."

Until there's enough data about where and when landslides have occurred in the past, there will not be enough information to issue useful warnings about future events at the global scale. Kirschbaum plans to expand the Global Landslide Catalog in order to provide a more complete dataset to evaluate landslide forecasting models. Adequate warning, one day, could help vulnerable people escape roaring slurries of slumping earth, to recover, rebuild or relocate.

This work was funded by the upcoming Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, which will improve upon current rainfall datasets, with real-time assessment of rainfall accumulations that lead to landslide triggering. The GPM Core satellite is set to launch in 2014 and will extend coverage of precipitation measurements using a constellation of satellites to deliver a global rain dataset every three hours.
