Distinguished Professor of anthropology James Skibo has recently been presented with the Society for American Anthropology?s award for Excellence in Archaeology for his life-long work and achievements in the field of archaeological ceramic studies. Skibo received the award during the SAA?s annual meeting this past April in Memphis.
Skibo, who was named distinguished professor at the beginning of 2012, has earned an international reputation with his research?which spans the fields of ceramic analysis, archaeological theory, and ethnoarchaeology, and has a strong focus on the American Upper Midwest, the American Southwest, and the Philippines. Skibo has, for over a decade now, been the director of the Grand Island Archaeological Program in Grand Island, Michigan. The program allows students to gain hands on experience by in archaeological techniques while at the same time participate in the highly regarded research program.
The recipient of numerous awards and grants to support his research, Skibo is constantly involving students in the process. He is a mainstay in aiding seniors with their capstone projects. He is also the editor of The Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory?, one of the highest ranked journals in archaeology. He has written 10 books and over 40 scholarly journal articles. His book Pottery Function?published in 1992?is considered to be a definitive text on pottery use-alteration, and has garnered an impressive number of citations from other scholars across the globe.
